EXPERIMENT NO. 1
COMPONENTS OF AIR

Materials:

beaker limewater glass tube small shallow bowl/ deep plate

matches thick candle tap water glass jar

Note: Use pencil only. Keep the experiment copy neat and clean.

Procedure:

1. Place the beaker on top of a table.

2. Pour some of the limewater into the beaker until it is half full.
3. Submerge one end of the glass tube in the limewater. Through the open end of the tube, blow gently
into the limewater. Observe what happens. Then set this setup aside.
4. Place the bowl or plate on the table. Position the candle firmly at its center.
5. Using the matchstick, light the candle.
6. Pour some tap water into the pan up to a depth of 2 cm. Make sure the base of the candle is
submerged in the water.
7. Slowly invert the glass over the burning candle to cover it. Observe what happens.

Guide Questions:

1. What happened to the limewater after you blew air into it? Describe. (2pts)

A cloudy, white precipitate formed in to the tube. This occurred because of the interaction of
Limewater (calcium hydrochloride), and our breath (carbon dioxide). This precipitate is composed of
Carbonate and water.

2. A couple of minutes after you covered the candle with the glass jar, what happened to the candle’s
flame? What did you notice on the sides of the jar? What does this prove? (4 pts.)

When the lit candle was covered by the glass container, it’s fieriness began to dim out. After
some moments, the candle died out, and water seeped into the container. The fire died out because
of the lack of oxygen in the airtight space. When the oxygen was fully depleted, the temperature
inside the container drops down, making the water rise in.

Generalization:
What does the activity prove about some components of air? (3 pts.)

The activity proves that a single change to the atmosphere of the Earth will result to another
change, just like as how the 4 spheres of our planet affect each other. This tells us that we must be
prepared of whatever results that may arrive because of the activities that we perform that destroys the
Earth’s atmosphere.

Concept/s Developed:

Why is the atmosphere important? How does it affect life on Earth? (3 pts.)

The atmosphere present on Earth is important because it makes the planet habitable. It blocks
some of the menacing rays coming from the Sun. It also traps heat, making Earth have a comfortable
temperature that is suitable to live in. Fragments from outer space also get blocked out by this.

Application:

Think about people who have respiratory problems and whose breathing has to be aided by
oxygen tanks. Research on oxygen tanks to determine if they contain all the components of air that
people need to survive. (3 pts.)

Oxygen tanks contain a high purity of oxygen gas, leaving out the other gasses in the
atmosphere. Although this will do for people to survive, people will not have the benefits from inhaling the
other gasses. Also, inhaling pure oxygen for long periods of time is dangerous as it may cause oxygen
poisoning.

Valuing:

Correlate each layer of the atmosphere to yourself as you face the different stages on the breath of life
that God gave you. (5 pts.)

Layer of the Atmosphere Its Relation to Your Life

This is where my outermost layer. This is
where I take direct hit from the things that I
Exosphere experience either its good or bad.

This is where I absorb the some of the

problems that I have in life and make it
Thermosphere good just as how this sphere absorbs the
sun’s dangerous rays.
This is where much more bigger problems
that I encounter is deflected of my life, just
Mesosphere like how this layer protects the Earth from
solid objects from outer space.
This layer is the one where aircrafts fly.
This layer for me is my comfort zone,
Stratosphere where I can freely do things without
distractions, that is weather for Earth’s
planes.
This is my innermost feelings. Weather
here can change anytime, just as how my
Troposphere feelings change with certain stimulus.
