EXPERIMENT NO. 3
HARD – BOILED EARTH

Materials:

Hard-boiled egg (large size) plate paintbrush paint color

Procedure:

1. Place the hard-boiled egg on top of a plate then taps it lightly in different places to produce cracks of
various lengths and sizes.
2. Using a paintbrush, color the entire egg, making sure that the cracks will become visible once stroked
with the brush.
3. Gently squeeze the egg until some parts of the shell finally breaks up.
4. Without removing the shell, cut the egg into half. Observe the different layers present inside the egg.

Guide Questions:

1. What do the egg, the pieces of shell, and the cracks in the shell represent? (3 pts.)

The hard-boiled egg represents the Earth, the pieces of shell represent the crust, particularly portraying
the plate tectonics. The crack then represents the fault line.

2. Aside from eggs, what other materials do you think can be used to represent the structures of Earth?
List at least three. (3 pts.)

Materials such as an avocado, peanut M&Ms, and a corn dog. These 3 things all have a trait that acts as
a crust, mantle, and a core.

Generalization:
Compare and contrast the cross-section of the egg with that of the layers of Earth. (4 pts.)

Cross-section of the egg Layers of the Earth

We can see the shell (removed, crust), egg white The cross section provided from research divides
(mantle), and the yolk (core) the layers into the 4 main layers (crust, mantle,
outer core, inner core)

Concept/s Developed:

How does the interior structure of Earth affect the processes at its surface? (2 pts.)

The quote what you eat is what you are is analogous to the incidents that happen in the Earth. Having a
disruption in the core might result to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and other disasters.

Application:

How do scientists determine the composition of Earth’s interior? (3 pts.)

Scientist uses a device called seismograph that detects seismic waves. They infer the layers of the Earth
based form this data.

Valuing:

Save Me!

Write different ways of preserving and maintaining the greatness of the earth
inside the boxes. Explain in one paragraph the steps for you to accomplish the
ways you will write. (5 pts.)
Limit the use of corrosive Reduce, reuse, and recycle Conserve energy by switching
materials that destroy the Earth materials to limit waste off appliances that are not in
use.

By limiting the use of corrosive materials such as CFCs, using the 3 Rs to limit waste production, and
conserving our limited energy will help us maintain the Earth for the future generations to come.
