Earth - The planet of life

The shape of the Earth

Take an orange. Peel it off and look at it carefully. Do not throw away the skin.
Now answer the following questions.

a. What is the shape of the orange?

b. How does it look at the top and the bottom?
c. How does it look in the middle?

The Earth is round, but it seems flat to us. This is because it is very big. Its shape is
called a sphere (round, like a ball). It is a little flat at the top and the bottom and
has a huge bulge in the middle.

 History : In early centuries before the common era (BCE) many ancient cultures
considered the shape of the earth to be flat like a disk. In the 4th century BCE, Plato
wrote about the spherical shape of Earth and after him, his student Aristotle in 330
BCE provided the evidence of the spherical shape of the earth. Scientists did a lot of
research and started accumulating knowledge, performed various experiments and
studied their observations and it was proved that the shape of the earth is spherical.

The surface of the Earth

Photographs of the Earth taken from space show that the Earth is blue. This is
because most of the surface (outer part) of the Earth is covered with water, which
looks blue from space. This is why it is also called the ‘ Blue planet ‘.

All the plants, animals, and people that live on the surface of the Earth survive
because of:
● The presence of water on the Earth
● The Earth’s atmosphere
● The heat and light of the sun

Think and answer:

Why is the water of the Earth important ?

What would happen if there was no air to breathe ?
What would happen if there was no sunlight ?

Earth is a beautiful planet. With all of its oceans, plants, animals and land. The
variety of life on Earth is what makes it so special. Actually, the fact that Earth
has life which already makes it unique!

Observe the images given below, what do you see? This is common these
days. Factories emit smoke and a lot of garbage is thrown around. What does this
show? Think and answer.

In the images given, you see that we have added many harmful substances to our
environment. Most of these things are man-made.

These substances are affecting the environment. The addition of these substances
to the environment is called pollution. The unwanted substances that are added to
the environment are called pollutants.

Activity 2 : Recall the classroom discussion and complete the activity.

Deforestation is cutting down a large number of trees and clearing out forest
areas.Be Inquisitive Indu and list down causes of deforestations.

Some of the adverse effects of deforestation are global warming, climate change,
soil erosion and wildlife extinction. Be Sustainability Suki and list down some
preventive measures to avoid deforestation.

Activity 3 : Imagine your friend has invited you to his birthday party. His house
is a few Kilometers away from the hospital. At the party, you hear music being
played at a high volume. Coke is served in disposable plastic glasses and food in
thermocol plates.
Be Sustainability Suki and answer the following questions.

How do you think it is affecting the environment? How can your friend celebrate
his birthday without causing harm to the environment? Write your suggestions in
the space below.

How can we save our environment ?

● We should plant more trees.

● We should use vehicles fitted with CNG- ( compact natural gas ) instead of
petroleum. CNG is more environmentally friendly than other fuels.
● We should not use polythene bags and use bags made of cloth and paper.
● We should always use garbage bins to throw garbage.

Follow 5 Rs
● REFUSE - refusing waste in our lives is the most effective way to minimize
waste.
● REDUCE - To use less and not waste
● REUSE - To use the things again for some other purpose
● REPURPOSE - To use a product for a purpose different from what it was
originally used for.
● RECYCLE - To make something new out of the waste

Activity 3: Our environment includes our immediate surroundings. We must also

keep our surroundings clean and tidy.

Be Communication Cara and design a poster to spread awareness among people

in your community/apartment to keep it clean. Add slogans/sentences to persuade
people.

Your poster should include alternatives and solutions to keep the surroundings
clean.

community.
