LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET
GRADE 7-SCIENCE QUARTER 4

I. Introductory Concept

You have learned in the previous lesson that Earth’s natural resources include air, water, soil,
minerals, plants and animals. All resources used by humans, including fuels, metals, and building
materials came from the Earth. Many of these resources are not in endless supply. It has taken millions
of years to develop and accumulate these resources.
As you explore more, you will learn how to conserve natural resources and the ways to use them
wisely without wasting them up completely. Each one of us should think about how to make things
sustainable. Remember: The lives of future generations depend on how we use natural resources today.

II. Learning Skills from the MELCs

MELC: Cite and explain ways of using Earth’s resources sustainably.

OBJECTIVES: By performing the activities, you must be able to:

a. understand that the Earth is composed of several natural resources;
b. cite some examples of the ways to conserve natural resources; and
c. identify the effects of some human activities on natural resources.

III. Activities: Perform the following activities. You may ask the help of your parent/guardian.

A. Activity: “HELPFUL or HARMFUL?”

Directions: Read each description below. Decide if it helps or harms the Earth’s natural
resources. If it is helpful in producing or protecting our resources, ENCIRCLE helpful. If it
destroys our resources, then ENCIRCLE harmful.
B. Analysis. Study and analyze the pictures below. Answer the questions that follow.

1. What does the picture tell or show?

2. Do you think these human activities affect our environment? Explain your answer.

_____________________________________________________________________________
3. What are you going to do to conserve these resources?

4. Why is it important to conserve natural resources?

C. Abstraction

The Earth’s natural resources include air, water, soil, minerals, plants and animals. Conservation
is the practice of caring for these resources so all living things can benefit from now and in the future. All
the things we need to survive, such as food, water, air and shelter, came from natural resources. Some
of these resources, like small plants, can be replaced quickly after they are used. Others, like large
trees, take long time to replace. These are renewable resources. Other resources such as fossil fuels,
take million years to replace. These are non-renewable resources.
People often waste natural resources. Animals are overhunted. Forests are cleared, exposing
land to wind and water damage. Fertile soil is exhausted and lost to erosion because of poor farming
practices. Fuel supplies are depleted. Water and air are polluted. Population of human beings has grown
enormously in the past two centuries. Development and conservation can coexist in harmony. When we
use the environment in ways that guarantee we have resources for the future, it is called sustainable
development.

D. APPLICATION
A. RENEWABLE AND NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES
Directions: Place each resources below as either a renewable or non-renewables resources.

Trees wind coal animals water

Natural gas rice sun energy air oil/gasoline

RENEWABLE NON-RENEWABLE
B.
REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE
How can I reduce the things How can I reuse the things How can I recycle the things
I waste? at school? at home?

“REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE”

Directions: Lists down some of the ways in order to conserve Earth’s Natural Resources using the
3R’S.

Write a commitment statement about your role as a responsible citizen in your community in maintaining
balance in nature. Complete the “I WILL” statement below.
