What is illegal
deforestation?
Illegal logging means forest
products being harvested,
transported, processed, and bought
or sold in violation of national or
international laws.

- Illegality during transport
- Illegality during harvesting

ILLEGALILTY
"What makes it illegal?"
- describes something that is explicitly
prohibited by law -
During Transport
Illegality may also occur during transport, such
as illegal processing and export. Illegality can
also occur through the avoidance of taxes and
other charges, and fraudulent certification.
These acts are often referred
to as
- wood laundering -
During
Harvesting
The harvesting procedure itself may be illegal,
including using corrupt means to gain access to
forests; extraction without permission, or from a
protected area
- corrupt -
a willingness to act
dishonestly in return for
money or personal gain.
Causes
Some factors that encourage illegal
logging and deforestation.
Factors

Demand for raw materials Corruption

Corruption plays a major part in illegal logging
High demand in the marketplace made some such as giving access to a protected area for the
people to willingly break the law and trespass illegal loggers
forests with bad intention

Mentality Lower price

These illegal loggers have such negative mentality More people tend to buy raw materials in the
to not care about the environment and commit illegal market due to its lower price therefore
these activities increasing demand for it

Lack of regulation
When the regulation is low illegal logger can
easily get away with their wrongdoings and
continue ruining the ecosystem
Effects
Effects of illegal logging and deforestation can be split into
various subcategories:
• effects to the environment
• effects to the economy
• effects to the society
Effects to
society
Once trees are logged it can cause various natural
disasters like:
• Landslides - Deforestation destabilizes the soil as
tree roots decay, further increasing landslide
hazard.

• Floods - Deforestation leads to decreased water

holding capability of soil. This causes excessive
water flow into the ground, resulting in floods.
Effects to
economy
Deforestation can also give negative impacts to the
economy

• Government can lose profit due to the

avoidances of taxes economy
• Depresses world timber prices depending on the
product
Effects to
environment
Deforestation plays a major part in ruining our
environment.
• Ruined biodiversity - floras and faunas loses its
habitat
• Climate change - cutting trees both adds carbon
dioxide to the air and removes the ability to
absorb existing carbon dioxide.
How do we
outcome illegal
deforestation ?
Stricter regulation
Upgraded and stricter regulation would help a
lot in solving this problem. This will also be
more effective with better supervision.
Avoid single-use
packaging
Avoiding single use packaging like cardboards
can lower the demand for raw material will
decrease the demand for raw material like
woods and timber products.

Summary

In conclusion, protecting trees is very important because trees contribute to our

environment by providing oxygen, improving air quality, climate amelioration,
conserving water, preserving soil, and supporting wildlife.
