Covid – 19 has disrupted the regular life and it is a pandemic that the world is still grabbling

with. Without an effective and lack of vaccine, the only possible solution was to implement

lockdowns. All institutions of daily life, be offices, shopping centers or school, had to closed

to break the chain of Covid – 19. Livelihoods have taken a hit and so did education.

However, uncertain times did not mean that education can be put on hold indefinitely. The

necessity to continue education posed a plethora of problems or challenges. The present

discussion will shed light on those challenges both from a learning as well as the teaching

perspective, in the Indian context.

With campuses closed, the only way to continue education is to use technology that is widely

available in today’s world. Therefore, the mode of education has become virtual. It should be

considered that the transition, though it has its own hiccups, was a bit smooth because several

schools, colleges and universities were in the initial stages of digitization. No doubt they were

plunged in to without proper preparation but the still could find the resources to do, within

the limited amount of time they had. With technology it is possible to conduct daily classes

and trace the growth of the students. However, the transition is not without its own challenges

or problems.

Technical Problems:

Even though we live in the age of technology, not all have adapted to new technologies. And

how can one either? The pace of evolution of technologies that are in use is just too high. It is

good when it comes to the larger picture or overall progress and development, it isn’t so

much for adaptation. Scores of people find it difficult to adapt to the changing technology. It

isn’t so that it cannot be adapted to or learnt, but it needs proper guidance. The access to basic

of technological knowledge is not easily available to people, be it teachers or students. It is

easier in the urban regions because people have to a large extent access and they themselves,

directly or indirectly, easily come to encounter this technology. It is not the same for the

those in the rural areas.

Solution: Through, both private and public institutions, the general public should have access

to the resources that can help them to acquire the basics of computer technologies.

Economic Problems:

India is a vast country where internet connectivity, the hardware and the software conduct

virtual is just not available to people. With the onset of Covid – 19 and the consequent

implementation of lockdowns, there has been an exponential decrease in the number of

students attending educational institutes in India. They just don’t have the resources and the

neither the government or the educational institutes where they are admitted will be able to

help them in any way in this regard. Therefore, the ones who do not have the economic

resources have their education suffer the most.

Solution: Government has to take it upon itself to identify the economically backward

students or empower NGOs or the educational institutes to carry out the process of taking

education to these students.

It is so that the learning is not adequate as well. Even if the technical problems and the

reasons that they arise from were to be mitigated, learning is a multi – dimensional process

that cannot be restricted to screens. It is not just a process of acquisition of knowledge, it is

also the acquisition of useful skills, better values, and strong habits. With no discipline, the

learning process is going to reach its fruition.
