Interior Design Guidelines
University of Miami 2015 Edition
PHILOSOPHY
Overview
The principal purpose of the University of Miami Interior Design Guidelines (UMIDG) are to
ensure that the University’s interiors spaces possess a consistent identity while also reinforcing
the University brand.
Supplementing the development of the University of Miami’s Building Standards and Campus
Interior Signage Standards, these guidelines have been developed as a practical tool for the
design of interior spaces within University facilities. All new interior design work throughout the
University should use and adhere to these guidelines inclusive of all campuses, hospitals
(UHealth) and the Gables One Tower. These guidelines are standard policy of the University
and are available via the internet on the Facilities Design and Construction website.
The University of Miami Interior Design Guidelines are administered and fall under the
jurisdiction of the Office of the University Architect. The Office of the University Architect
releases updates to the guidelines at the beginning of each calendar year.
HISTORY
The Office of the University Architect has assembled a selection of materials and finishes
palette intended to function as a basis for the University’s Interior Design Guidelines, supporting
the University’s legacy and branding through standardization. Recent projects demonstrate a
new brand cohesiveness consistent with the University’s Visual Identity Manual, while
maintaining regard for end user needs, budget and maintenance.
The University Interior Design Guidelines were presented to the University’s Buildings and
Grounds Committee (BAG) on March 28, 2013, receiving a unanimous approval by respective
members. The guidelines were represented using interior renderings and pictures, along with
material finishes samples of future and completed projects for all campuses.
On April 18, 2013, the Interior Design Guidelines were presented in the same manner to the
President, the Provost and the Budget Office, where materials and palette were also approved.
The UHealth interior guidelines were presented to the University of Miami Hospital (UMH) on
April 9, 2013 and Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (SCCC) on April 15, 2014.
Leadership from both hospitals supported the new interior branding palette by directing their
incorporation into future projects. UHealth finishes will be incorporated in The Lennar
Foundation Medical Center.

The Office of the University Architect should also be contacted for assistance and/or guidance
where the scope of work is limited to furniture purchases only.
University of Miami Brand: Interior Palette is based on South Florida’s regional landscape;
flora and fauna interlaced with the University’s architectural legacy.
Timeless Interiors Design: The use of furnishings, materials, associated colors and patterns,
should be able to stand the test of time with respect to durability and aesthetics. Patterns and
graphics should be as neutral as possible and not organic in nature. Hues should adhere to
those outlined in this document.
Sustainability / LEED (The US Green Building Council’s LEED - Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design): In support of the University’s commitment to a high level of
environmental stewardship and to reduce carbon emissions, interior spaces shall be renovated
in a sustainable manner. Local and/ regional recycled products and materials should be
incorporated into interior renovation projects. Systems that are not only efficient but essentially
waste free should be incorporated. Wherever possible, interior spaces should be as open and
transparent as possible, allowing exterior views whilst also bringing in as much daylight into
indoor environments. Regenerative design should be incorporated wherever possible.
The goals of the University’s interior design’s guiding principles are to promote the wellbeing of
the University Community by providing a safe and productive work environment in a collegial
atmosphere.

e. Terrazzo
The use of terrazzo flooring is limited to new projects and/or specialized spaces such as
monumental lobbies, major gathering and pre-function spaces. Although terrazzo flooring is
recognized as a major interior finish component reminiscent and very much part of the South
Florida tropical mid-twentieth Mi-Mo architecture, materials and respective installation are
costly. It is also important to note that when considered as part of an interior finish scheme,
close attention must be paid to acoustics, remediation must be considered as part of the scope
of work in order to control sound reverberation. In campus buildings where terrazzo flooring
exists, preservation and restoration must be considered.
The following terrazzo flooring has been approved for the Coral Gables Campus. Alternate
flooring manufacturers may be used if specifications and appearance are equivalent (please
refer to the University of Miami Building Standards).

f. Resinous Flooring
The use of resinous flooring is limited to new projects and/or existing areas where specialized
programmatic functions and extraordinary performance is necessary. Note that when
considered as part of an interior finish scheme, close attention must be paid to acoustics,
remediation must be considered as part of the scope of work in order to control sound
reverberation (refer to the University of Miami Building Standards for specifics).

Laminates: The use of materials to ensure minimal impact on the environment and the future
maintenance of global forests is of great concern to the University. The implementation of high
quality durable products is also of prime importance. Laminate finishes matching wood veneers
have greatly improved in the last decade with a vast array of options. The aesthetic difference
between a laminate resembling wood versus a natural wood veneer is negligible, in addition, the
cost for the latter is substantial. This includes the fact that most laminate products are now
completely and/or include a high percentage of recycled materials. The use and durability of
wood finishes with respect to maintenance concerns is also not practical when compared to
synthetic products. Leading laminate product lines also incorporate sustainable design
approaches. Thus, the University standard finish for furnishings and millwork shall be plastic
laminates (PL).
The following Plastic Laminates have been approved for the Coral Gables Campus. Alternate
manufacturers may be used if specifications and appearance are equivalent (please refer to the
University of Miami Building Standards).

The use of terrazzo flooring is limited to new projects and/or specialized spaces such as
monumental lobbies, major gathering and pre-function spaces. Although terrazzo flooring is
recognized as a major interior finish component reminiscent and very much part of the South

costly. It is also important to note that when considered as part of an interior finish scheme,
close attention must be paid to acoustics, remediation must be considered as part of the scope
of work in order to control sound reverberation. In campus buildings where terrazzo flooring
exists, preservation and restoration must be considered.

The durability and use of
wood finishes with respect to maintenance concerns is also not practical when compared to
synthetic products. Leading laminate product lines also incorporate sustainable design
approaches. Thus, the University standard finish for furnishings and millwork shall be plastic
laminates (PL).
The following Plastic Laminates have been approved for the Rosenstiel School of Marine and
Atmospheric Science. Alternate manufacturers may be used if specifications and appearance
are equivalent (please refer to the University of Miami Building Standards).

Leading laminate product lines also incorporate sustainable design
approaches. Thus, the University standard finish for furnishings and millwork shall be plastic
laminates (PL).

manufacturers may be used if specifications and appearance are equivalent (please refer to the

E. General Requirements
As part of the University Community, our actions and approach affect the success and
commitment to cut down the carbon footprint. The following should be considered:
Mini fridges should not be used as they represent a considerable energy load and in
most cases, not aesthetically integrated within the space. To discard your device safely,
please make sure to contact the University’s Surplus manager.
Individual heaters are not allowed (for additional information, please review UM’s Fire
Safety guidelines).
Artwork: In an effort to maintain a cohesive art framework in our education and healing
environments, art themes are currently in development for all campuses. Please contact the
Office of the University Architect before proceeding with interior art installations

The following terrazzo flooring has been approved for UHealth. Alternate flooring

The following terrazzo flooring has been approved for the Richmond Campus. Alternate flooring
manufacturers may be used if specifications and appearance are equivalent (please refer to the
University of Miami Building Standards).

f. Resinous Flooring
The use of resinous flooring is limited to new projects and/or existing areas where specialized
programmatic functions and extraordinary performance is necessary. Note that when
considered as part of an interior finish scheme, close attention must be paid to acoustics,
remediation must be considered as part of the scope of work in order to control sound

b. Solar Shades
The University standard for solar window shade treatment in office spaces is the
Phifer fabric color Oyster/Beige (or compatible) with a 5% openness
(transparency). When room blackout is requested by the end user and validated
by the Office of the University Architect, an opaque shade is added on the
glazing side equal in color to the 5% openness fabric shade.
New interdepartmental / suite doors shall be a single glass door with an 18 inch
side lite.
Glass door and frame should consist of a clear anodized aluminum finish frame.
Door leaf shall have an 8 inch bottom rail dimension with a top rail’s dimension
equal to the side stiles. Note that the overall door height must be considered
when dimensioning the side stiles and top rail in order to assure a fitting
proportion (a range of 5” - 6” is acceptable).

The durability and use of
wood finishes with respect to maintenance concerns is also not practical when compared to
synthetic products. Leading laminate product lines also incorporate sustainable design
approaches. Thus, the University standard finish for furnishings and millwork shall be plastic
laminates (PL).
The following Plastic Laminates have been approved for the Richmond Campus. Alternate
manufacturers may be used if specifications and appearance are equivalent (please refer to the
University of Miami Building Standards).
