The three components of consumer health are:

a. Health Information
 Health information is any idea that we hear from people around
us, read from books and other printed materials, or from the
media that influence our health.
b. Health Products
 Health products are items that we consume to improve our well-
being, like medicine, food, clothes, furniture, electronics, etc.
c. Health Services
 Health services are programs we avail from various providers such
as physicians, nurses, therapists, health workers, hospitals, clinics,
and the government. Some examples of these health services are
insurance, treatment and cure, complementary and alternative
medicine.
It is important to examine and evaluate the reliability of any piece
of health information before applying it to your well-being. Here
are the criteria that will help you determine whether the
information is reliable or not.

When evaluating health information and products, you must check for:

CREDIBILITY - This tells about the source and recency of the

information.
 Who or what is the source of the information/product?
 Is the source qualified?
 Is the information updated?

CONTENT - This tells about the accuracy, disclaimer, and

completeness of information.
 Is it complete and correct?
 Does it have scientific basis?
 Does it state the limitations, purpose, scope, authority and
currency of the information?
 Does it have labels that contain the directions for use and
storage, expiration date and warnings?

DISCLOSURE - This tells about the purpose and caveat of the

information.
 What is the purpose of giving the information/product?
 Is it for marketing purposes?
 Is it for selling products or for disseminating information?
INTERACTIVITY - This tells about the feedback mechanism and
means of information exchange between the source and the
consumer.

 Can the consumer offer comments and suggestions?

Health Information is a product of years of studying and researching done by a doctor, scientists and specialist. We
sometimes encounter misleading health information, there are many reasons regarding that. First, Lack of knowledge,
Some people didn't have the opportunity to study in a school. So when they encounter a problem, they will just make up
things in order to solve it. That is why education is a very important part of a human's life by giving you the right
knowledge and making you live healthy. Another reason is scammers. These days, there are many liars and fakers
around the world, we call them scammers. They may invent fake news just to make you believe in it, and in the end they
will end up stealing your money. We can't avoid these situations, not everyone in the world can be trusted. Some people
will do anything just to get money. Some may even spread fake health information. We should all be aware of it. And
just listen to what our doctor says. Another reason is lack of access. Some people lives in the provinces or on a
mountain. And usually these places don't have quality healthcare areas. So the people here will just invent their own
medicine, and try to endure all the health pain their suffering. And lastly, Need of attention. In this Era, people are quite
different, they all crave attention. And for them to get attention, they will make misleading health informations.
Misleading health information can be spread by anyone. It includes people with low educational status, scammers,
people that are in need of attention and people from cultural tribes that doesn't really have an information about
modernization. Health information is from research datas, surveys, clinical studies and experimentations. Doctors that
spent years studying about human health are usually the one that gives us the right health information.

There are many misconceptions or myths that I already heard of. For Example, Eating a food that dropped on the floor
within 5 seconds is safe. Based on the scientists, this is not proven. bacteria may contaminate your food simply by just
a millisecond of dropping it on a dirty floor. Another example is an apple a day keeps the doctors away. Apples may
pack vitamins and other nutrients but it will not be enough to keep your body protected from certain diseases. Another
one is Eating Ice cream can make your cold worse. Well, as said by doctors, ice creams doesn't increase mucous
production, in fact, it even helps soothen your sore throat.
Another one is sugar causes hyperactivity in children. Sugars doesn't make you hyperactive. It can just increase your
red blood cells which can help you stay stronger. Another example is eating carrots can give you great night vision.
Carrots contain vitamin A, which can be good for your eyes. But it will not help you have night visions. Another example
is hair and nails keep growing after death. If someone dies there hair and nails would initially dry out and shrink.
Another example is It takes 7 years to digest a gum. A gum is indigestible but still it will just pass your intestines and
exit your body just like the other foods. Another example is microwave can give you cancer. Even though microwaves
produce radiations, these radiations won't give you cancer. These will just help heat up your food. Another example is
After eating you need to wait an hour before you can swim to avoid cramps. Cramps are very common when it comes
to swimming, but having a full stomach doesn't necessarily result to a cramp. Another example is Everyone should
drink 8 glasses of water a day. The main thing you should remember is to drink water only if you are thirsty, not by
counting how many glasses. Too much water intake is also not that good for your stomach. And last example is sitting
too close to the tv is bad to your eyes. It does give you headache, but these are only happening on the earlier days
when their tv still produces X-rays, but now they dont.
