What is Health Information

Health information is any concept, step, or advice that various
sources give to aid the health status of an individual. The
type of information varies depending on “diseases, sexual
health, weight loss/gain, drugs and alcohol,
depression/mental illness, violence, smoking, eating
disorders, acne/skin care, local clinics, and sexual assault”
(Payne, et al., 2005).
HEALTH 10

Health information is
everything that is seen, read,
or heard in relation to human
and community health.
Knowing these information
help in choosing which can
be trusted, which is fake, or
which advertisement is risky.

Example of products:

1.Over the counter (O TC) drugs

More than a half a million of OTC health care products are available, varying
from mouthwashes to pain relievers. Even some of the most beneficial OTC drugs
can be unsafe. Pain relievers like aspirin and ibuprofen can harm the stomach
lining and lead to ulcer, while large dosages can bring kidney damage.

2.Cosmetic product
Many health care products are intended for external use. Some have little
effect but due to advertising campaigns and misconceptions, they are extensively
used by the public.
HEALTH 10

3. Skin Product
OTC skin rejuvenators have never shown efficacy in changing
skin properties.

4. Skin Product
Several products are designed to remove hair, like shaving.

5.Oral Product
Oral products include toothpaste, mouthwashes and gargles.
HEALTH 10

These are some ways to buy health products and services

intelligently:
1. READ:
• Read the labels and look for information pertaining to the nutritional
quality of food.
2. COMPARE:
• Compare the products and services and judge for yourself which
among the product are useful, beneficial, and effective.
3. INQUIRE:
• Ask direct question to sales personnel if there are things about the
product that are not clear to you before buying.
HEALTH 10

RELIABLE HEALTH INFORMATION, PRODUCTS AND SERVICES

Educating yourself about your health issues or medical conditions is an

important part of managing your health. The best place to find health
information is from healthcare professionals. Ask your doctor,
pharmacist or allied health professional when you have medical
questions.
HEALTH 10

Health information is readily available from reputable sources such as:

 Doctors
 Health workers and nurses;
 Health brochures in your local hospital, doctor’s office or community
health centre;
 Telephone helplines such as NURSE-ON-CALL or Direct line; and
 Your doctor or pharmacist
reliable health information websites, such as government sites, condition-
specific sites, support organization sites, and medical journals.
HEALTH 10

UNRELIABLE HEALTH INFORMATION, PRODUCTS

AND SERVICES
Faith healers and witch doctors are trusted by many of those
in rural areas, it is part of the culture. Some patients even
believe in healers even more than doctors because of many
testimonials from relatives and other people. They are able to
help using plants from around the area, but only on minor
problems. It becomes dangerous when a few claims to heal
cancer with oil and boiled leaves.
HEALTH 10

Example of unreliable sources:

 Faith healers;
 witch doctors;
 blogs; and
 unreputable internet sites
