Assumption: Gift, Reward, and Prophecy

T
oday we rejoice in celebrating the Assumption
into heaven of Mary Most Holy, the Mother of Je-
sus and our spiritual Mother. Having been so close
to her Son all through his life, and especially in the most
important moments, it was just fair that she should be
reunited with him immediately after her death.
Mary’s assumption into heaven, body and soul, is
the crowning of the many extraordinary gifts she has re-
ceived from the Blessed Trinity in view of her role as the
Mother of the Redeemer. Unlike all other privileges she
received, however, her assumption was also a reward for
the generous faithfulness with which she always fulfilled
her duty and responded to God’s graces. In this respect,
Mary’s Assumption is an encouragement to all of us to
respond to God’s graces with equal generosity. If we do so, her assumption becomes also a fore-
shadowing of what God has in store for us at the end of time.

Mary’s assumption into
heaven is one of the consequen-
ces of her unique association
with her Son Jesus, and the fruit
of God’s special protection of
her from the destructive power
of the devil. Let us listen to how
John symbolically describes
such unique favor in the Book of
the Apocalypse.

Book of Revelation
God’s temple in heaven
was opened, and the ark of his
covenant could be seen in the
temple.
A great sign appeared in the
sky, a woman clothed with the
sun, with the moon beneath her
feet, and on her head a crown of
twelve stars. She was with child
and wailed aloud in pain as she
labored to give birth.
Then another sign appeared
in the sky: it was a huge red
dragon, with seven heads and
ten horns; and on its heads
were seven diadems. Its tail
swept away a third of the stars
in the sky and hurled them
down to the earth.
Then the dragon stood be-
fore the woman about to give

she gave birth. She gave birth
to a son, a male child, destined
to rule all the nations with an
iron rod. Her child was caught
up to God and his throne. The

Mary’s assumption into
heaven is a magnificent sign
of Christ’s total triumph over
death. Her glorification in body
and soul is also a prophetic sign
of the sharing in Christ’s resur-
rection which God has in store
for all those who belong to him.

Corinthians
Brothers and sisters:
Christ has been raised
from the dead, the firstfruits
of those who have fallen asleep.
For since death came
through a human being , the
resurrection of the dead came
also through a human being.
For just as in Adam all die,
so too in Christ shall all be

But each one in proper
order: Christ, the firstfruits;
then, at his coming, those who
belong to Christ. Then comes
the end, when he hands over
the Kingdom to his God and
Father, when he has destroyed

Mary’s “Magnificat” dur-

sumption into heaven.

Mary set out and traveled
to the hill country in haste to
a town of Judah, where she
entered the house of Zechariah

beth, filled with the Holy Spir-
it, cried out in a loud voice and
said, “Blessed are you among
women, and blessed is the
fruit of your womb. And how
does this happen to me, that

Mary remained with Eliz-
abeth about three months and
then returned to her home.

Profession of Faith

All –I believe in one God, the Fa-
ther almighty, maker of heaven
and earth, of all things visible
and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus
Christ, the Only Begotten Son
of God, born of the Father be-
fore all ages. God from God,
Light from Light, true God from
true God, begotten, not made,
consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were
made. For us men and for our
salvation he came down from
heaven, (bow)* and by the Holy
Spirit was incarnate of the Vir-
gin Mary, and became man.*
For our sake he was crucified
under Pontius Pilate, he suf-
fered death and was buried, and
rose again on the third day in
accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven and is
seated at the right hand of the
Father. He will come again in
glory to judge the living and the
dead and his kingdom will have
no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life, who
proceeds from the Father and
the Son, who with the Father
and the Son is adored and glori-
fied, who has spoken through
the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, cath-
olic and apostolic Church. I

Prayer of the Faithful
P –Mary’s assumption into
heaven is first of all her personal
glorification in the totality of her
being. It is also the assurance
that now we have in her a most
powerful advocate who inter-
cedes for us with her Son. Full of
confidence in her motherly love,
we pray:

of Mary, Lord, hear us!
C –For the universal Church,
God’s family on earth: May the
celebration of Mary’s Assump-
tion into heaven be an effective
reminder of the destiny of glory
which God has in store for the
community of the redeemed. Let
