Lesson 27 – THE ARTS

INTRODUCTION

Culture is expressed in various ways such as language, art, religion, tradition and ways of life.
Among these, art has an important place in understanding culture. Understanding of arts help us to
know the nature of human beings better. Human beings have various kinds of needs. Food, shelter
and clothing are the basic needs of human beings for survival. But there are also other kinds of needs
which help man to develop as an individual in society. Life is not complete without other kinds of
needs which uses mental a physical faculties for doing different kinds of activities for the society.
These needs are satisfied when they are created by human beings themselves. One of such needs is
creative activity. It provides greatest satisfaction to those who create. The creative activities emerge
out of art, science or literature.

2. Explain the different aspects of arts.
3. Explain why dance as a form of arts, is universal.
4. Discuss between the difference between prose and poetry.
5. Explain the role of education in developing arts among the school children.

SUMMARY

If you say you want to study the Arts, most people will have no problem understanding what
you’re talking about. They know that your work could end up in museums or on the stage, and might
include painting, sculpture, music, theater and dance.

Art is important because it encompasses all the developmental domains in child development.
Art lends itself to physical development and the enhancement of fine and gross motor skills. For
instance, when kids work with play dough, they fine-tune their muscle control in their fingers

Art influences society by changing opinions, instilling values and translating experiences
across space and time. Research has shown art affects the fundamental sense of self. Painting,
sculpture, music, literature and the other arts are often considered to be the repository of a society's
collective memory.

Arts subjects encourage self-expression and creativity and can build confidence as well as a
sense of individual identity. Studying arts subjects also help to develop critical thinking and the ability
to interpret the world around us.
