Topic: Specific Issues in Science, Technology, and Society

What I already know in this chapter is that during the

information age, it is a period of time which began towards the
end of the 20th century. The information age is when information
became available easily through the use of technology. It was in
this era that brought about a time period in which people could
access knowledge and information easily. There were many
different inventions that came about because of the Information
Age, one of which was the computer. The Information Age has
changed people, technology, science, economies, culture, and
even the way people think. The Internet is arguably the most
prominent innovation of the Information Age. The Internet
allowed people to access information with the touch of a button.
The Internet has turned society into homebodies who do
everything from the comfort of their homes instead of exploring
What I Already outdoors to complete tasks. The Internet is arguably the most
Know prominent innovation of the Information Age. The Internet
changed the way people do everything. It came out that people
are lazier than before, but it also makes a great benefits in a way
that the population become smarter. Nowadays, we can do
everything online; shopping, communicating, bill paying,
working, education, entertainment, even ordering food. This turns
out to be good, but it will always have its disadvantage. From the
Stone Age up to the Industrial Revolution has led to the world as
we know it. Without the information, knowledge and discoveries
of those from the past, we would not be where we are today as the
past has shaped our present and will continue to shape our future.

When it comes to the application of computers in science

and research, computers have changed the ways in which
scientific research is compiled and analyzed. Scientists, engineers
and researchers are able to compile vast amounts of data and
leave it to the computer to work through the data while focusing
on another area of the research project. This creates research

results with fewer errors and better-engineered products.
Computers used in scientific research have the ability to analyze
data in ways and at speeds which is not possible with the use of
human eye. In surfing the internet, it contains a collection of
valuable information. And with that, we have to check know on
how to check the reliability of the web sources to avoid getting
information’s wrong. This easy access to the information poses
positive and negative impacts to our society. Therefore, we have
to be extra vigilant on sharing wrong information as it may
mislead others.

I also had the idea on biodiversity and healthy society.

Biodiversity is important to humans for ecological life support as
it makes life habitable on earth. The threat to biodiversity has a
great negative impact to all organisms.

In case of Nano world, what I know already it that with

Nano technology it has the ability to see and move a single atom
or molecule fell within the realm of science fiction.

And lastly, I already had the idea about climate change.

Wherein, it is a worldwide issue and the main cause of climate
change is the human activities. Global warming is the ultimate
effects of climate change. The changing of environment is
expected to cause more undesirable effect and Human health is
vulnerable to climate change.

The knowledge that I get in Chapter 3, is that the

Information Age brought about many new inventions and
innovations. Communication has an invaluable effect on lives in
the Information Age. Many communication services like texting,
email, and social media developed and the world has not been the
same since. It affects our lives in a number of ways and it is now
become vital in our everyday lives. People learn new languages
easier and many books have been translated into different
What I Learned languages, so people around the world can become more
educated. However, the Information Age is not totally all good.
People have adapted to their use for personal, professional, and
also social lives. The introductions of all the new communication
innovations truly have changed the lives of the vast majority of
the world if we compared to 100 years ago. Computer is not only
the type of service but services such as email, instant messaging,
social media and video conferencing are also of increasing
popularity and can accomplish similar objectives. However, some
2 of 5
communication services are not available and are not accessible
in some parts of the world.

I learn a lot about the Specific Issues in Science,

Technology, and Society. From the biodiversity and healthy
society, I was able to understand biodiversity within the concept
of ecosystem; the changes in biodiversity where it brings varied
effects; threats to biodiversity; the consequences of biodiversity
loss and also the nutritional impact of biodiversity. Biodiversity is
the foundation of ecosystem services to which human welfare is
intimately linked.

In lesson 3, the Genetically Modified Organisms: Science

Health and Politics which is about an organism that has had its
DNA altered or modified in some way through genetic
engineering. Using the Genetic engineering in the field of food,
medicine, and agriculture has advantages and disadvantages. In
developing nations across the globe, governments are struggling
with questions of what role of genetically modified organisms
should play in helping address a range of agriculture, nutrition,
and climate challenges. Some potential risks of Genetically
Modified Organisms, the potential environmental risk caused by
Genetically Modified Organisms, the potential human health risk
caused by Genetically Modified Organisms and concerns have
been raised over the environmental and health impacts of
Genetically Modified Organisms, as well as their impact on
traditional farming methods and issues around seed patents, and
farmers having to be dependent on corporations. The
Governments of developing countries are responding to those
concerns in a variety of ways with some banning Genetically
Modified Organisms outright, some are embracing them as they
show some potential benefits of Genetically Modified Organisms,
and others attempting to find balance between the concerns and
needs of all sides.

In lesson 4, the Nano world which is about

Nanotechnology that helps the improvement in health care,
environment, food, water, energy and also in agriculture.
Nanotechnology has the huge potential to transform people for
the better of their lives. Using the advanced technology they start
to develop a nanoscale using cheap and lightweight in the areas of
Science, Engineering, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The
concept of Nanotechnology and Nanoscience in which it can
direct and control the individual atoms and molecules.

In lesson 5, the aspects of gene therapy which using this
method and experimental technique that uses genes may treat or
prevent some human related illnesses. In Gene therapy it involves
altering the genes inside your body's cells in an effort to treat or
stop disease. But then, there are some issues and concerns which
human traits should be altered and its immune responses. This
therapy became possible through the advances of genetics and
bioengineering that enabled manipulating vectors for delivery of
extrachromosomal material to target cells.

In this chapter, I want to go deeper on the aspects of gene

therapy. I am always interested in the field of medical science and
if gene therapy continued for creating something or offers a
promising new approach to treating a wide range of diseases
including various forms of cancer, inherited diseases, and virus
infections. Several gene therapy techniques have been
investigated especially for cancer treatment. I look forward in the
future that gene therapy will ensure safety and effectiveness of
What I Want to these techniques. Knowing that gene therapy is only used to treat
Know diseases and the fact that other therapies that is already known to
be ineffective.

In addition, I am also interested in Nanotechnology. The

properties of some nanomaterials for the treatment of certain
diseases or cancer. I look forward in the future through the
applications of new advanced Nanotechnology that can be used to
benefit human health and the effective methods of delivering
drugs in medicine and new ways.

The information age is a period of time which began

towards the end of the 20th century. The information age is when
information became available easily through the use of
technology. There are people in the world that believe they can
live their entire life through the Internet. It is a period in human
history which is characterized by the shift from industrial to
information and computerization.

Using internet for entertainment and leisure as everyone

Application/Action deserves a bit of fun in their lives. With the use of modern
technologies it allows for anyone from the general public to
access all sorts of entertainment and leisure services to fit around
any busy schedules and lifestyles. However, as far as
entertainment is concerned in this information age, it creates
impacts in our work ethics by distracting us and causing us to
lose interest in the task we are doing. Also this time of period has
also created a shortage of jobs and making many jobs obsolete
because machines are now being used and appreciated to do the
work instead of humans. With that, information means a careful

balance is needed when it comes to sharing.

In a world of ubiquitous information, there is always more

out there. Information gathering is easy. People are becoming
more mature and more educated due to things like the computer
and the Internet. This time of period has reshaped governments,
with new technology being created every day. Governments can
now have more advanced and effective militaries. Because of
things like the Internet, new laws had to be put in place to stop
hacking, piracy, and identity theft.

In today's day and age, knowledge of science as well as

the creation of new and innovative technology, the act of
communication has been made so simple that one is be able to
practically relay information to any number of people, no matter
how far apart they may be situated in the world, in a matter of
seconds. Major contributors to communication in present times
include technologies such as mobile phones and several internet
services such as instant messaging/video conferencing, email as
well as social media. The companies in the future will be smart
about scanning for information and accessing the knowledge of
their employees. It does not surprise me at all for the idea that the
information age will eventually be superseded by another age.
Knowing that the industrial revolution in the late nineteenth
century ushered in the industrial age, and the digital revolution in
the mid twentieth century spurred the emergence of the
information age.
