1. Witnessing Death and Providing End-of-life Care to Dying Patients:
Exploring San Pedro College Nursing Students’ Experiences

Death and dying are inevitable phase of the lives of the human beings. It
is a natural process that involves the termination of physical, mental,
psychological, social and spiritual life on earth. Each person’s dying process and
death is an individualised experience that occurs in their own way and time.
During the phase of death and dying, patients usually spend their time in
hospitals provided with essential medical care and interventions by the
healthcare professionals. However, nurses are the ones who spend more
bedside time with patients than any other members of the health team and play
an important key role in caring for death and dying patients. According to
Sampaio (2016), healthcare professionals are prepared to save lives, but were
not prepared to cope with the imminence of death, as it challenges the human
and professional omnipotence, therefore representing one of the stressful factors
associated with the health professionals’ practice. Parry (2015) also added that
caring for patients who are facing death is not simple and can be painful and
difficult.

During clinical duty, nursing students are exposed to several types of

clinical scenarios especially to death and dying patients. The clinical placements
of nursing students are one of the most important aspects of nurse education.
However, they can be enough to independently cause an increase in stress to
the learners. A nursing student firsthand experience with patient death may pose
cognitive, emotional and clinical challenges. These challenges can sometimes be
overwhelming, depressing and traumatic for the nursing students. Thus, the
study will be conducted to explore the issues on the experiences of the nursing
students of San Pedro College witnessing death and providing end-of-life care to
dying patients on the course of their clinical practice.
2. A Qualitative Study: The Challenges of San Pedro College Nursing
Students in the Clinical Learning Environment

Clinical learning is a main part of nursing education. Nurses’ competence

is based on knowledge and skills taught to them in the clinical setting. Nursing is
a performance-based profession in which clinical learning environments play an
important role in the acquisition of professional abilities and train the nursing
students to enter the nursing profession and become a registered nurse. Unlike
classroom education, clinical training in nursing occurs in a complex clinical
learning environment which is influenced by many factors. An optimal clinical
learning environment has positive impact on the students’ professional
development, a poor learning environment can have adverse effects on their
professional development process. The unpredictable nature of the clinical
training environment can create some problems for nursing students. Identifying
challenges with which nursing students are faced in the clinical learning
environment in all dimensions could improve training and enhance the quality of
planning and the promotion of the students. Since failure to identify the
challenges and problems the students are faced with in the clinical learning
environment, prevents them from effective learning and growth. As a result, the
growth and development of their skills will be influenced.

3. A Qualitative Analysis on the Experiences of Barangay Health Workers

(BHW) during Contact Tracing to Covid-19 Patients

The current coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is widely considered the

greatest challenge to public health system. In the absence of vaccine, many
countries resorted to some interventions that will reduce the transmission of the
virus such as hand hygiene, physical distancing and restricted movement have
been proposed, including the lockdown policy. One of the key components of
many countries in the post-lockdown strategies is the use of contact tracing.
Traditionally, contact tracing relies on a team of health workers to track possible
transmission, through house-to-house interviews with those people who get to
have contact with covid-19 positive patients. According to Powder (2020), in the
public health, contact tracing is a tried and true method of connecting the dots
between a person with an infectious disease and their close contacts, who report
symptoms indicative of an infectious disease and/or test positive for the disease,
are identified and given appropriate medical interventions. Contact tracing is one
of the key public health response actions to control the outbreak of a novel virus.

Being a frontliner in this time of pandemic, it is essential to explore the

firsthand experiences of barangay health workers in order to know the deepest
challenges encountered during contact tracing of covid-19 patients. Barangay
health workers’ experiences would show a picture about what they encountered,
how they felt and how they handled the situation in times of contact tracing. The
reported challenges of the contact tracers will be used to provide improvement in
the kind of tracing system practiced during this time of pandemic.
