“Explain how can mobile or smartphone benefits the practice of nursing.”

The integration of mobile technology and social media usability in the mobile phone has
changed the landscape of the medical profession with a large proportion of healthcare providers
regularly using such technology. Such technology which comes ones in-unit package by the name of
smartphones not only boost communication between health workers, it also boosts data collection and
eases the rate of decision making. With modern internet connectivity and computing power, the
smartphone has improved efficiency and accuracy in the health care setting. Despite the advantages
associated with the integration of smartphones in a healthcare setting, there are several drawbacks to
such technology. These drawback ranges from physician distraction while delivering care,
interruption by less acute issue, creation of a physical barrier between the user and the rest of the
world, reduction/ risk of patient privacy and cognitive and psychological. It's also explored the patient
safety as one of the drawbacks of smartphone and social media integration in the hospital setting.
According to Tran et al. (2014), storage of patient personal information increases the potential for a
security breach in smartphone devices are high through hacking, lost phones, and stolen devices.
There is a high demand for explicitly content that is most cases is acquired for education, publication,
and manipulation of a patient social being. Such information is acquired through a black market that
is why there is a need to maintain high ethical consideration in the use of smartphone devices around
the patient. In such phase, the paper will explore the rules and regulation that guide the use of
smartphones and social media in the hospital setting, advantages and disadvantages of using a
smartphone and social media in hospital and professional and ethical principles to the appropriate use
of technology.
Smartphones and social media act as a platform for collaboration between a healthcare
professional. They allow easy sharing of information, finding solutions, and keep pace with modern
healthcare development. Smartphones and social media allow nurses and other healthcare
professionals share ideas on a different treatment option for a specific disease. Therefore, smartphones
and social media act as a mode of communication collaboration between healthcare professional
(MacMillan, 2015). In the same line, smartphone and social media also act as an agent of education
to healthcare providers. In the ever-changing world, discoveries are being posted on clinic websites
on a daily basis. The presence of such devices and sites to healthcare professional allows access to
new treatment methods and medicine that could have taken a long time to be available in remote areas
(Peck, 2017).
Although smartphones and social media have a profound advantage in the health sector, they
equally pose a risk in equal measures. The major disadvantage of smartphone and social media in the
healthcare setting is maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality. According to Yoon (2017),
presence of smartphone and social media usability in healthcare setting increases the chances of
nurse’s breach of patient privacy by sharing confidential information on social media or with their
friend via smartphones. Also, research has shown that social media and smartphone use while on duty
result in distraction and interruption of nurses. This distraction and interruptions have been associated
with neglect or poor work ethics.
The use of smartphone and social media require healthcare professionals to bide to strict
professional and ethical principles. These principles include but not limited to, maintaining personal
autonomy, equality, non-malfeasance, integrity, and impossibility. There is a need to maintains ethics
by maintaining information privacy and deposition, being open, ensuring personal information
security, accountability, and least instructive alternative. The use of smartphones and medial social
houses within healthcare has been a revolution in the delivery and completion of the health care
process. It has been used as a tool for educating nurses in modern treatment method and an agent of
collaboration between different professionals. In the same line, it poses a challenge in the maintenance
of patient confidentiality and privacy. Research has shown that social media and smartphones act as
a tool of distraction and interruption during the delivery of the healthcare process. Thus, there is a
need to abide by strict principles and ethical code of conduct in order to ensure patient information
privacy.
