ED 803: PHILOSOPHY OF EDCUATION
PHILOSOPHICAL CRITIQUE PAPER 1

Teachers are mentors and play an active role in inculcating independent thinking in

students. However, to do that as a teacher, I must have a teaching philosophy of my own.

Students always look up to their teacher and therefore, it becomes necessary for me to have

thoughts to inspire them.

Teaching philosophy has been defined as the map, which provides directions to move

ahead. One may feel lost without a map. In the same way, we are going to be missed while

teaching if a specific path is not decided. Hence, a map is always needed to make informed

movements. It is not possible to make students learn something until the teacher knows why

and how he/she wants to teach. Once I know my path, I will be helping my students to plan to

reach their destinations.

Teachers are termed as the future makers of the community. People like me are the

ones who help students choose different professions and identities. A teacher can leave a

profound impact on students and help them make independent decisions in the near future.

The core values that my students learn from me today are going to be applied and used in

society as they grow up. A solid philosophical background will help ensure that these values

are all positive. If we believe in breaking stereotypes, there are high chances our students will

follow the same philosophical path. If my philosophy is accepting the already existing theories,

rather than questioning them, my students might follow my path. Understanding the

philosophy of education will teach them the need to know the whys.

“Excellent service to humanity is our commitment.”

By learning philosophy, I would be able to view and analyze from the perspective of my

students. Apart from understanding why students are behaving in a particular way, as a

teacher, I would also be able to know how students perceive their actions. This helps them

adapt better teaching strategies and guidance, eventually resulting in improved results. Best of

all, I would be able to analyze his/her actions and understand the positives and negatives of

their methods. Just as if it helps students, it helps them as well.

Philosophy of education also teaches a teacher the concept of not prejudicing the

personality of each student. Remember that I need to consider all students equal. But, this

should not affect the unique potential and capabilities of each student. As educator, I am

required to teach creativity, autonomy, and curiosity to all students without compromising

their intellectual levels. The idea is to avoid giving up on a pupil, who is a low-level learner.

Philosophy teaches you that ideology, where you train with an unbiased attitude.

Philosophy also teaches about unifying each pupil and the teacher as one body to

ensure harmony. The idea is to work together to create a better citizen, who diligently serves

community and keeps check on morality. Through the philosophy of education, I can

understand how to deal with the students and unite them as one. Even the students will then

be able to confidently speak to the teacher as if he/she is their friend.

Through philosophy, I can ensure that my student not only retains knowledge from all

completed assessment but also develop a sense of humane values and ethics. These personal

As a kindergarten teacher, I have done and will continue to do almost anything that is

effective to help students learn. I specifically model what I teach and move words into action.

We learn ethics, freedom and tolerance by behaving ethically, being free, tolerant and flexible.

This does not mean that I lower my standards for students. I always set high standards, but

then I do everything I can to help students reach them. The reading affects me that makes

my philosophy translated into actions, such as my decision to never grade on a curve, which I

believe only discourages students who feel they can never win. The use of curves undermines

confidence and does not foster a positive non-competitive learning atmosphere. In all of my

classes, I make a particular effort to be available for individual attention and I try to maintain

a mix of my teaching and advising responsibilities. To achieve this, I assign students to small

groups and I work with them individually in their writing and reading activities. At the same

time, I do not see participatory learning as a distinct methodology. It is an underlying principle

for all types of instruction. Even in a large discussion there is and always room for some form

of participation. Whenever possible, I use real world examples and studies. When the nature

of the material requires me to discuss or do a lecture, I do so, but I go beyond content

standards and performance standards. Moreover, I always incorporate interdisciplinary aspects

which allow students to explore the relationships between different fields to be capable of

understanding the whole before they can approach its parts.

said before, is a lifelong process that does not end when a class is over. I do my best to

motivate them towards such a goal. To this end I have developed different resources, such as

internet site, to allow students to practice that experience of self-learning by interacting with

other dimensions with the guide of parents and by teaching about their personal

interpretations. These types of strategies help students foster the ability to search information,

as well as to select and interpret that information. Given the demand for quality education, I

do not measure excellence in terms of the amount of knowledge accumulated, but rather the

capacity to evaluate the possibilities and limitations of that knowledge. This is one of the

reasons I use a wide range of evaluation techniques to reduce, as much as I can, the

inevitable subjectivity of measuring learning and the most difficult task of formal teaching.

In, summary, education should be related in intercultural and interdependent world. A

world in which education teaches man to foster sharing attitudes, to compete with oneself and

not with others. Learning to be tolerant developing aesthetic sensitivity, ethical behavior and

moderation of superfluous elements, and to develop pity and solidarity for the suffering of

mankind. A world free from prejudices, where learning to care, learning to share, learning to

be, learning to grasp the whole and act on the parts, and learning to carry on learning should

be some society’s some main objectives.

pursued multiple techniques: guided research, live-in learning-work courses, guided didactic

conversations, lectures, field seminars, educational games, individual or small group projects,

distant and programmed techniques and so on. But above all, I have learned that I need to

evolve every single moment to keep innovation as part of my teaching; to practice research as

a way of improving my strategies, being updated and searching for knowledge; to behave

more as a learner than as a teacher; to help students develop objective criticism and search

for new channels for a more enlightened future. I strongly believe that in order to be a good

teacher you must remain a student. As John Dewey said, education is not affair of telling and

being told, but an active and constructive process.

Thus, the best learning strategies that I have experienced are to teach interactively the

search for knowledge, to practice the highest ethical standards, to treat students with respect

and concern for their achievement, and to be dedicated to my profession with love and

commitment. However, I am by no means satisfied and I am still searching for ways to

improve my teacher-learner responsibility. As John Dewey said, education is not affair of

telling and being told, but an active and constructive process
