Introducing CPS:
EAP Teaching Fellow James Arthurs
I am from Ireland. Kazakhstan is different from Ireland in many ways. The area of
Kazakhstan is almost 40 times that of Ireland, while the population is only four
times greater. Kazakhstan is far from the oceans, and has land borders with many
countries. Ireland is an island with the Atlantic Ocean to the West.
One point of contact though, is language. People in Ireland speak English, a
language which almost replaced Irish, the original language of the Irish people,
over a thousand years. There has been a great effort to restore the Irish
language, with some Irish-medium schools and some teaching of Irish in many
schools.
People in Kazakhstan have been more successful in restoring the Kazakh
language, while continuing to benefit from the scope of Russian language and
literature. I hope that you will find that the English language will open new
windows on the world and that you will achieve a new dimension in your
education through it.
