Student Support

Dear Students,

Please be aware that your Student Adviser,

Eric Wente, has appointment slots available
for student meetings.

Some of the common reasons that students

make an appointment are:

issues with adjusting to the workload and

managing their time
personal issues that may be affecting
their ability to focus on their studies
questions related to undergraduate
programs and progression

If you would like to meet with him to discuss

any academic or personal issues
please click here to visit the
Student Advising Appointment Page.

Week 3

Next week the ALC has a full range of

activities to choose from.

This is your opportunity to identify your

language weak spots and take a Short
Course before you become too busy with
other assignments.

Speaking Circles offer the chance to

practice speaking in non-academic
environments.

Personal Consultations are your

opportunity to get additional personalised
help and advice related to your studies.

people talking about things YOU enjoy or
think are important.
There is a Speaking Circle every afternoon of the week.
These are held at the same time every week.

Places are limited so sign up early. Each week is independent

and you can attend as frequently as you like.

Sign up here on The ALC Moodle. Sign up is open.

Week 3
Short Courses
Next week, we also begin our Short Courses.
The schedule is below. Much more detail is available on the
ALC Moodle page. Sign up is now open.
All classes have a size limit, so it’s first come first served.

Each course lasts for 4 weeks and if you attend all of the
lessons you will get a beautiful certificate to hang on your
wall as proof of your dedication to improving yourself.

However, you do not have to attend every class. Come to as

many or as few as you like. You will always be welcome.

Week 3
Personal Consultations
You can sign up for help with both Math and EAP questions
from the ALC Moodle page.

Sign up for next week is open.

1. Choose a free time.

2. Add a comment if you wish. That’s it!
3. The tutor will email you a Zoom invitation just before your meeting.
4. The system will email you a reminder on the day of your booking.
5. If you want to change or cancel the booking just click on the same
link you used to make the booking.

Please cancel your booking if you change your mind or cannot attend.
This allows someone else to attend. If there are no free times, email
the manager and complain!

So there should be something for everyone.

That’s all for this week.

Have a good weekend.

Introducing CPS:
EAP Teaching Fellow James Arthurs

I am from Ireland. Kazakhstan is different from Ireland in many ways. The area of
Kazakhstan is almost 40 times that of Ireland, while the population is only four
times greater. Kazakhstan is far from the oceans, and has land borders with many
countries. Ireland is an island with the Atlantic Ocean to the West.
One point of contact though, is language. People in Ireland speak English, a
language which almost replaced Irish, the original language of the Irish people,
over a thousand years. There has been a great effort to restore the Irish
language, with some Irish-medium schools and some teaching of Irish in many
schools.
People in Kazakhstan have been more successful in restoring the Kazakh
language, while continuing to benefit from the scope of Russian language and
literature. I hope that you will find that the English language will open new
windows on the world and that you will achieve a new dimension in your
education through it.
