What’s In
Determining a source by accuracy means that you are asking, is the
information provided correct? Fake news has been a big problem for some time
now, and there are many people out there that will just read a post off Facebook
and believed it to be truth without finding an original or secondary source. So it is a
big challenge for us to determine whether the material that we viewed is truthful
and accurate.
In this module, you will be accomplishing varied activities to develop your
knowledge in determining the information you read is truthful and accurate. So
get ready with the activity below.

Activity 1 – Match my Words! Match the newspaper templates in Column A with

the correct TAGLINE or statement in Column B.

2. Pfizer is the most preferred vaccine for Covid 19.

3. Oranges are good source of Vitamin C.

4. Cats scratches can be harmful to humans.

5. Wearing facemask can help prevent Covid-19.

7
What Is It
Anyone can write anything in a book or Internet. Just because something is in print in
any form does not make it truthful and accurate. Just because you heard it on the television
or radio , does not make it true. Just because something was stated persuasively , by your
favorite polictician or actor, singer , author , or bestfriend doest not make it a fact or
accurate.
So in every case , it is very important that we should verify that the information we
read and heard is truthful and accurate. In viewing news , video clips , trailer , Facebook
posts or Youtube materials , do you have any ideas on how to determine their truthfulness
and accuracy?

THE IMPORTANCE OF DETERMINING THE TRUTHFULNESS AND ACCURACY OF

INFORMATION
Truthfulness is the quality of of being honest and not containing any lies. If you lie about
about something, then what you are saying is false. While accuracy is the quality or state of
of being correct or precise.
Sometimes the information presented in the different sources like in Social Media is
extremely incorrect and misleading, especially where politics or products are concerned.
Evaluating the information if it is truthful and accurate is very important because many lives
depends on it. Doing the necessary research, these things can be difficult because you may
not be used to reading political or scientific jargon ( depending on what applies to the subject
at hand ) but like most things , it gets easier with practice and diligence.

WAYS TO DETERMINE WHETHER THE MATERIAL VIEWED IS ACCURATE AND

TRUTHFUL

1. CURRENCY – pertains to the timeliness of the information conveyed by the material.

It is important to find out when the information was created. As accurate information
changes overtime , old information might be out-of –date or inaccurate anymore. This
is why it’s essential to look for up-to –date or current information. If looking for topics
about related events , you need to find up-to date sources.
2. RELEVANCE – is the relevancy or importance of the information for your needs. It is
important that the material you are looking at addresses the subject matter
thoroughly. Determine if the material provides all the data you need and examine the
content of the source and how it answer or fits the information you are looking for.
3. ACCURACY – refers to the truthfulness , reliabililty and correctness of the content.
Verify the information you already know against the information found from the
source. However , whe you do not know about how much the topic , you can double
check the content of the material against source that you already know is trustworthy.
Check if the information conveyed by the material is consistent with other sources
and see if they have cited the source/s where the information is from. Furthermore ,
look if the source contains correct spelling , punctuation , and grammar. If you notice
many mistakes , this definitely a sign that it is untrustworthy.
4. AUTHORITY – pertains to the source of information. Make sure that the souce of
material is written or created by trustworthy author , individual , group , insititution or
organization. Make sure that the creator or author is an expert in the field or has the
proper credentials and knowledgeable on the subject matter. Determine as well if the
material is biased or not. Be aware of the objectivity of the author and his / her
viewpoints.

8
5. PURPOSE- is the reason the information exists. It is also essential to consider why
the material is created. Because of the varied sources of information nowadays , in
print and in non print formats , it is very important for us to check the source to check
the accuracy the material they viewed before sharing it to avoid spreding Fake
news. If you are not careful , you can be relatively responsible for sharing fake news
, misinformation or disinformation.

FAKE NEWS – refers to deliberately misleading news stories or falsified information

disguised as news or legitimate reporting through one or numerous platforms such as
social media to deliberately deceive the audience for various reasons such as profit ,
political gain , or to advance ideological , social or economic interest.

HOW TO SPOT FAKE NEWS ?

Make sure to take note the following tips on hot to spot fake news.
1. CHECK THE SOURCE - look at the source where the material came from. The
easiest way to find the source is usually to follow link that will lead you to the original
content. Be wary that people who spread fake news often used addresses that
sound like real newspaper or oganization. Do a quick check of the author or creator.
You can look on the “ About Page “ to have clear dsecription and profile of the
author or creator. Be skeptical if there is no author listed or the author is anonymous.
Check the reputation of the author or creator as well.
2. CHECK OTHER SOUCES – find more information about the topic to find out if a
source might be biased or if the information conveyed true. Compare the material
you viewed from other sources that you already proven trustworthy.
3. BEWARE OF CLICKBAIT, BIASED AND BAD GRAMMAR – make sure that your
own beliefs and emotions do not cloud your judgment when viewing a material
because fake news is designed to feed biases and create shock value which could
easily trigger strong reaction such as fear or anger. Many fake news are designed
to draw emotions and to get your attention so headlines are often written in all
CAPSLOCK and outrageous. Take note as well of misspelling and grammatical
errors as most fake news are badly written.
4. EXAMINE THE SUPPORTING EVIDENCE - supporting information such as graphs ,
survey data, official statistics and quotes from experts will make a news story
accurate and credible so lack of it will tell otherwise.
5. WATCH OUT FOR FAKE PHOTOS - many fake news use images that are digitally
altered and changed using modern editing or software. It is essential to look closely
at an image portrayed to see if it has been changed or used in a wrong context.

DOH clarifies ‘brand agnostic’ campaign: Vaccinees to know brand only on-site by
Rimaliza A. Opiña with reports from PNA
The Department of Health has clarified vaccinees will not be deprived of their right to know
which brand of Covid-19 vaccine will be injected on them as this will still be disclosed in their
vaccination cards.
President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered the Department of Health to withhold
announcing the brand of vaccine available at vaccination sites to prevent people from
flocking at these sites once they learn the brand even if they are not yet scheduled to receive
their shots.
Among the vaccines granted an emergency use authorization (EUA), those
manufactured by Pfizer-BioNTech and Gamaleya Institute (Sputnik V) showed a high
acceptance rate as shown by people who flocked the vaccination sites.
However, the DOH said all vaccines granted EUA are effective in preventing severe
illness and deaths.
The agency also reiterated the best vaccine are those already available.
“Not announcing what brand will be available in inoculation sites will not take away the right
of individuals to be informed of the vaccine they are taking, as the vaccination process
entails on-site vaccine education, proper recording using vaccination cards, and monitoring
for adverse events following immunization,” the DOH said.
In the Cordillera and elsewhere in the Philippines, majority of vaccines being
administered are Sinovac followed by AstraZeneca. The initial batches of Pfizer and Sputnik
from the Covax facility of the World Health Organization were deployed at select areas in the
National Capital Region and in Davao.
The DOH reiterated its call for every Filipino to register with their local government
unit so they will be included in the masterlist of vaccinees.

14
As of May 19, the government has inoculated more than two million Filipinos
belonging to priority groups A1 to A3. The country is set to begin the vaccination of economic
frontliners and indigent population in the NCR plus on June 8.
In the Cordillera, the Regional Vaccination Operations Center has reported that
52,704 individuals belonging in the A1, A2, and A3 categories have already been vaccinated.
Abra has the highest vaccine utilization rate in the region at 93.51, followed by
Benguet with 71.77 percent; Baguio, 71.57 percent; Apayao, 62.16 percent; Mountain
Province, 60.63 percent; Kalinga, 59.88 percent; and Ifugao, 48.27 percent.
Records showed that 38,117 received Sinovac and 14,587 got AstraZeneca.
A1 had 34,574 vaccinees, 11,711 were senior citizens, and 6,409 belonged to the A3
category.
Around 10 individuals from the A4 category (other frontliners in essential sectors)
were also vaccinated during the ceremonial vaccination of daily wage earners and overseas
Filipino workers on May 1.
The DOH has allotted 105,538 doses to the Cordillera.
