Validating Information
MELC: Judge the validity of the evidence listened to (EN9LC-IVh-2.15)

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Given this learning activity sheet, you are expected to:

• describe sources of information,
• differentiate validity from audience and source and give examples,
• validate information presented in a material read.

When you are researching on an issue or an idea, you often find more than
one set of facts or opinion about the same topic. Judging the validity of data or
information can become very difficult when sources go to great lengths just to
prove that their stand or position on an issue is the best. Indeed, you need to be
taught on how to discern validity of information.

Let’s be familiar with terms related with validating information:

1. Validity refers to the soundness and strength of argument.

Question to ask: Is the evidence clear and effective?

2. Audience refers to people who have read or will read a particular text, publication, or
writer, considered collectively.
Question to ask: For whom did the author intend to read or view this source?

3. Source is someone or something from which you obtain information and provides the
information needed. When a source is “clear, effective and truthful on the information it
presents” we say that it has validity. But how can you determine if the source is valid?

Here's a couple of questions to consider which can serve as signals to consider the validity:
Who is the author of the source?
What are his or her qualifications?
Is he or she a recognized expert in the field?
Does he or she represent an organization?
If so, what is the organization's mission and goals?
If you are unsure, try doing a Google search on the author or his or her organization.
How did the source get its information?
If the source includes references, look at a few of the references - do they look like
reliable sources of information?
Does it look like the author is citing the source correctly? Use your best judgment!

1
Does the source have references? If a source does not include references, see if you
can fact check the information in other ways.
Example: If you are looking at a news article that quotes experts in a field, do a
Google search of the expert’s name and see what information you can find.
It is also important to know the types of sources as these are relevant in identifying
the kind of information used as an evidence in a certain text. Examine and understand the
following to consider the validity of a text.
Types of Sources
1. Scholarly source is written by an expert for other experts in the same field.
Example: journal, researches
2. Trade source is written by a professional in a particular industry for others in that same
profession.
Example: current news and trends for a specific industry, advertisements
3. Popular source is written for broad consumption; the author generally does not assume
the audience will have extensive background knowledge on the topic.
Examples: magazines such as Time Magazine and newspapers like Baguio Midland
Courier.
To evaluate your understanding of the lesson, answer the following tasks:
ACTIVITY 1
Ask one family member to read the news article aloud or you can read it aloud in front
of any of your family member. Read as many times as you want to then analyze the
information given by answering the guide questions.

Mountain Province remains Delta variant-free

By Liza Agoot
BAUKO, Mountain Province – Adherence to minimum public health standards will keep this province
untouched by the Delta variant of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).
Mountain Province is the lone area in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) that has not been
infected by the highly contagious variant.
As of 4 p.m. on Tuesday, it has the lowest number of active Covid-19 cases at 242 out of the more
than 7,100 in CAR.
The province has recorded 5,239 Covid-19 cases, 4,902 recoveries, and 95 deaths since 2020,
“So far we have not registered a Delta in Mountain Province and we thank God for that,” Governor
Bonifacio Lacwasan Jr. said in Ilocano on the sidelines of the Cordillera Peace Talks 35th anniversary
celebration in Mt. Data Hotel on Monday.
“The residents know what they are doing and they have gotten used to the protocols. They continue
to observe the health protocols so that we are always ready to protect ourselves from this problem,” he
added.
After the first quarter of 2021 when cases surged, Lacwasan said residents learned not to be
complacent and to always protect themselves from being infected.
Based on the record of the Provincial Health Office, most of the cases here involved travelers,
returning residents, and authorized persons outside residence who go in and out of the province.
Now, non-residents must present both vaccination cards and negative results of reverse
transcription-polymerase chain reaction tests.
Residents can present either of the two at checkpoints.
Even if cases are manageable, Lacwasan said their temporary treatment and isolation facilities are
in place.
“As long as we don’t get hundreds a day, we can accommodate the patients,” he said. (PNA)

ACTIVITY 2: A bit of Baguio!

I think it is about time for you to validate information that you have read.
Read the passage below and analyze the information by answering the questions
after.
Brief History of Baguio City
Brief History about Baguio City Baguio City was first called “Kafagway”. The word
“Baguio” is derived from the Ibaloi word “bagiw’ which means “moss’, conducive for the growth
of mossy plant. Baguio City is a highly urbanized city in northern Luzon of the Philippines and
its provincial capital is Benguet. Baguio City is also known as Summer Capital of the Philippines
because of its cold weather. It is also known as the “City of Pines” because many pine trees
dominate the landscape.
During Spanish occupation to the Philippines, the Spanish colonizers conducted a series
of expeditions to go to Baguio. Under Spanish comandante Galvey, the province of Benguet was
set up. Afterwards, the Spaniards sold the Philippines to the United States of America for
$20,000.
When the Americans arrived in the Philippines, they found the pine-covered hills and
frosty-winded Baguio. They carved Kennon Road from the mountains surrounding the Bued
River Canyon, connecting Baguio to Pangasinan and Ilocos lowlands.
The Japanese bombed Baguio on December 8, 1941 and occupied it on December 27 of the same
year, setting up their headquarters at Camp John hay. However, the war eventually changed
course and on September 3, 1945, General Yamashita formally surrendered to the Americans
at the US ambassador’s residence in Camp John Hay, after which, Baguio immediately set to task
of rehabilitation.

When the Philippines was granted independence in 1946, Baguio city resumed its role
as the summer capital of the Philippines, with Camp John Hay being retained by the Americans
under the RP-US bases agreement.

Activity 3: Look for It!
Read the excerpt and answer the questions that follow.

When a child becomes entangled in an online conflict, parents

understandably feel stricken. But they do not need to panic, experts say.
Increasingly, parents have options, ranging from giving their child emotional support
to contacting schools and the police, as well as Web sites and service providers,
many of whom are tightening their processes to handle complaints. The first rule is
“Do no harm,” said Parry Aftab, a cyberbully prevention expert. “Give them a hug
and make sure they feel comfortable and safe. Their greatest concern is that you’re
. . going to make a ’mama drama,’ call homeland security, make it worse.”
