Archie was on his to school when his classmate Farhan approached him.
“Archie, have you done your homework for Ms. Hilario’s class”? At once Archie
remembered that he had homework to do. He was busy with his phone all weekend
and has totally forgotten about that homework. Upon entering their classroom, he
saw some of his classmates copying homework from others’ notebook. But Archie
knows that it is not right to copy because that is cheating. Although he would be
punished for not doing his homework, he still did not copy from his classmates. He
went to tell his teacher that he doesn’t have a homework and sincerely apologized for
it. His teacher did not get angry but instead said with a smile, “I’m glad that you were
honest enough to admit it, I appreciate your honesty. You can still do your homework
on your lunch break.”

What is It

A lot of things you see online especially in your social media feeds may appear to be
true but not. False information (commonly known as Fake News) are news, stories or hoaxes
created to deliberately misinform or deceive viewers. Usually, these stories are created to either
influence people’s views, push a political agenda or cause confusion and can often be a
marketing strategy to gain profit for businesses. Now more than ever, media literacy or the
ability to critically analyze information is a critical skill one must possess.

 There are two sub-categories of False Information

1. Misinformation - is false information which was unintentionally disseminated on

online platforms. It usually lacks context and needs further clarification like false
rumors and pranks.

Example: Covid19 disease can be cured by eating tons of garlic.

*This is an example of misinformation because up to this day there is still no proven
cure for the Covid19 disease which makes this claim a false rumor.

2. Disinformation – is intended to convince online users to believe or favor

something. It is a propaganda orchestrated to deceive its audience like hoaxes.

Example: Covid19 is a biological weapon made in a laboratory in Wuhan, China.

*This is an example of hoax, a disinformation that intends to deceive people by
using orchestrated propaganda against something or someone. In this case, the
creator/source of this hoax would like to make people blame and hate China for this
pandemic.

It is very important to evaluate information first to ensure its accuracy and truthfulness
before you believe them. What are truthfulness and accuracy anyway?

Truthfulness is the quality of being honest or not containing any lies while Accuracy
is the reliability and correctness of a content or material.

 Things to Check in Order to Determine the Truthfulness and Accuracy of a

Material or Content

 Source
- Who posted or published it? Is the source credible? Is it the proper authority
to post that kind of content? What is purpose of the author/creator in posting
or publishing it?

Credibility is defined as the quality or power of inspiring others. Therefore,

a credible source must only provide information that are accurate, verified,
and free from any form of biases.
 Errors
- Is the news article or video full of grammatical errors and inaccurate
information?

The easiest way to tell whether a site or channel is a credible source of

information is to simply look at its grammar, spelling, and whether its title
matches to the content and context of the news article or story.

 Biases
- Is there any potential bias in the post or content of the post?

It is important to realize that everyone has an agenda, a reason for wanting

you to believe whatever subject they are discussing or product they are
promoting. Be aware of the objectivity of the author/creator and his/her
viewpoints.

 Support
- Does the source provide support for its claims?

Always make sure that the source provides support for its claims. The
author/creator should provide references of reliable links to other sources
for the users/viewers to verify such claims. In this regard, it is very important
to distinguish facts from opinion. It will only take a few minutes or even
seconds to verify whether a statement being mentioned is a fact or not.

 Clickbait
- Does the headline/title match the content and context of the post?

Clickbait (on the Internet) is a content whose main purpose is to attract

attention and encourage visitors to click on a link to a particular web page.”
- Jay Geiger, 2006

Authors/creators sometimes fabricate their headlines/title, knowing that you

might walk away without reading the article and believing their claim. If the
headline causes your eyes to pop out of your head, read the entire article
first before deciding to trust the information or not.
