9
COMMUNICATION is the act of transferring information from one place to
another. This can take in any form. It may be vocally (using voice),
written (using printed or digital media such as books, magazines,
websites or emails), visually (using logos, maps, charts or graphs),
non-verbally (using body language, gestures and the tone and pitch of
voice) or combination of all of these.

ORAL LANGUAGE
- communicating with other people through the use of words
- involves a manner of utilizing thinking, knowledge and skills in
order to speak and listen effectively.

In short, everything that comes out in our mouth are what we called
ORAL LANGUAGE.
In our life, there are positive and negative ways of using language.
One of the first concepts a speaker needs to think about when looking at
language use is APPROPRIATENESS. When we say appropriate it means
whether the language is suitable or fitting for ourselves, as the speaker;
our audience; the speaking context; and the speech itself.
The following are the guidelines to make sure that you are always carrying
yourself in a professional and courteous manner when it comes to oral
language appropriateness.

1. Always use proper English and try to be as grammatically correct

as possible
It is important that you refrain from using slang and always use proper
English (This is the type of English that you would have been taught in
school, would read in most books, on official correspondences, etc.) when
writing and speaking.
If you come from an area where English is not your first language, or
there is some form of locational dialect, do what you can to try to speak in
proper English. Be mindful of how other professional around you speak,
and you should begin to notice how you can improve.
2. Follow the formality of the situation.
Whenever you are speaking in an informal setting, it is acceptable to use
less formal English. However, you should always strive to remain
professional and polite.
3. Never use profanity or abusive language
There is never an acceptable time to use profane or abusive language in
any places.

10
4. Never use improper, biased, discrimination or offensive language
in writing or verbally.
Try to be sensitive to racial, ethnic, religious, or other groups. Never make
generalizations or comments about stereotypes and do not engage in any
sort of joking that makes fun of someone based on those things. Show
respect to everyone.
5. Do not use slang.
It is best to avoid using any kind of slang even if that slang is common or
used in other settings. Remember that certain idiomatic expressions
might be regional, and to some, they might even be offensive.
6. Be mindful of using jargon or technical talk
If you do feel that you need to use jargon or other technical terms,
remember to define those terms so that everyone knows what you are
talking about.
7. Be as polite as you can without sounding fake
Your mother engrained in you at an early age the importance of
remembering to say please and thank you and using your manners at the
dinner table, the same can be said in the classroom or any places. You
will go much further and create more lasting relationships with colleagues
and clients if you treat them with respect and show that you are sincere.
8. Improve your skills by learning
To enhance your communication skills, and to learn how to better use
appropriate language when writing or speaking, consider taking a
workshop or a seminar so that you can learn new techniques and practice
in an informal setting.
Source: https://www.aresearchguide.com/appropriate-language.html

To have an effective oral language in communication. Be oriented on the

following skills to take into consideration and to master.

Speak clearly: Speak loud enough for others to hear, and enunciate your
words. Focus on sounding out each syllable so that the person
you’re talking to can understand you easily.

Choose your words carefully: The words you use should be appropriate
by anyone’s standards. If you ever find yourself wondering whether
or not a word is appropriate for the workplace, it’s probably best
not to use it. Practice using words that show your intelligence and
professionalism.

Use the appropriate tone: Your tone, or sound of your voice, says a lot
about what you’re saying and how you feel. Make sure the tone of

11
your voice matches the words and the sentiment you are
expressing.

Consider your audience: Sometimes you might want to change your

communication style or how you communicate, depending on who
you are talking with. How you speak to your five-year-old niece is
not the same way you should speak to your boss.

Respond appropriately: Responding appropriately requires that you

think before you speak. When you respond automatically, you risk
saying something you don’t mean and possibly offending the other
person.
Source: https://www.conovercompany.com/types-of-communication/

On the other hand, people communicate not only through oral language
but also through body language. We are not always aware that posture or
the way we approach another person speaks volumes. By creating
awareness around the expressive nature of the way a person uses their body
and voice, we can be critically aware of the non-verbal behaviors that will
equip us to express ourselves in an effective manner.

STANCE is a way of standing or holding your body, especially for a

particular purpose.
Examples:
STANCE MEANING
Standing Straight
w/ Shoulder Back
Confident

Crossed Arms Defensive

Slouch of the Shoulders Defeat/Tired

Crossed Legs
toward the speaker Interested
Crossed legs
away from the speaker Disinterested/ Distracted

How you stand in front of the room speaks before you open your mouth.
Your stance can tell the audience that you're happy, scared, confident, or
uncomfortable. Audiences "read" these messages unthinkingly but

12
unfailingly. Stance speaks. A balanced stance with weight even but slightly
forward tends to say that the speaker is engaged with the audience. A
slumped stance leaning to one side suggets the speaker doesn't care.

BEHAVIOR it refers to people's tendency to express feelings, needs, and

thoughts by means of indirect messages and behavioral impacts.
Example:
Someone who speaks really quickly, with a high pitch during an
interview can be assumed to be nervous.

You can improve your communicational behavior by focusing on these skills:

Consider other people’s feelings: One day, a coworker might tell you
something personal that doesn’t seem important for you to know, or a
supervisor might seem angry with you for no reason. To figure out
why, think about what the other person is feeling. Consider any
situations that may be affecting their emotions and how that might in
turn affect what they say to you.
Consider your own feelings: Just as other peoples’ feelings can affect
the message they’re trying to send, your own feelings can get in the
way of your communication as well. When you feel a strong emotion or
feeling, pay attention to that emotion and try not to let it get in the
way of your message. Both positive emotions, like happiness, and
negative emotions, like anger, can get in the way of communication.
Have empathy: Empathy is the ability to understand and relate to the
feelings of someone else. Once you’ve learned to recognize another
person’s feelings, you can go one step further and actually relate to
those feelings.
Operate on trust: Good communication requires you to build trust
between yourself and the person with whom you’re communicating.
You can earn the trust of others by sending nonverbal cues that
match your words.
Recognize misunderstandings: A misunderstanding happens when two
people think they are on the same page about something, but in
reality they are thinking two different things. Misunderstandings
happen all the time, but emotional awareness can help you to avoid
misunderstandings.

13
Bring it all together
While we all want to believe that it's enough to be natural in front of a
room, it isn't really natural to stand up alone in front of a group of
people. It's an odd and unusual thing that creates stress, tension, and
stomach troubles. Being natural won't cut it. We need to be bigger, more
expressive, and more powerful. It takes extra effort and energy. It also
takes skill and practice. With so much depending on communication and
communication depending on body language, it's worth getting it right.
Work on your body language-gesture, stance, and facial expression-to
make the most of every speaking opportunity.

Let us look back to the video clip that you have just watched. Do you
think that the oral language, stance and behavior portray by the nurse
appropriate? Does the behavior of the nurse comfort the mother not to worry
about her child?
Yes, you’re right! It is inappropriate. Knowing the fact that the mother of
the sick child is so depressed with her child’s situation, the approach/
action by the nurse cannot ease the worried mother. It makes the situation
more complicated. With this, an individual must take note of the appropriate
oral language, stance and behavior in order not to create conflict.
Do you have questions? Is the discussion clear to you? Well, it seems
that you are now ready to do more activities for this lesson. You may
proceed now.

Activity 3. Retelling a Story (Narrating Events)
Read and comprehend the story entitled “My Father Goes to
Court” by Carlos Bulusan. Reflect and answer the italicized
questions given in your answer sheet. Then, accomplish the given
template and activity below.

MY FATHER GOES TO COURT

Carlos Bulusan

When I was four, I lived with my mother and brothers and sisters in a
small town on the island of Luzon. Father’s farm had been destroyed in
1918 by one of our sudden Philippine floods, so several years afterwards we
all lived in the town though he preferred living in the country. We had as a
next door neighbor a very rich man, whose sons and daughters seldom came
out of the house. While we boys and girls played and sang in the sun, his

14
children stayed inside and kept the windows closed. His house was so tall
that his children could look in the window of our house and watched us
played, or slept, or ate, when there was any food in the house to eat.
1. What happened in 1918?
2. Why did the narrator’s family live in the town?
3. How does the family of the farmer differ from the family of
the rich man?
4. What will happen next?

Now, this rich man’s servants were always frying and cooking
something good, and the aroma of the food was wafted down to us from the
windows of the big house. We hung about and took all the wonderful smells
of the food into our beings. Sometimes, in the morning, our whole family
stood outside the windows of the rich man’s house and listened to the
musical sizzling of thick strips of bacon or ham. I can remember one
afternoon when our neighbor’s servants roasted three chickens. The
chickens were young and tender and the fat that dripped into the burning
coals gave off an enchanting odor. We watched the servants turn the
beautiful birds and inhaled the heavenly spirit that drifted out to us. Some
days the rich man appeared at a window and glowered down at us. He
looked at us one by one, as though he were condemning us.
We were all healthy because we went out in the sun and bathed in the
cool water of the river that flowed from the mountains into the sea.
Sometimes we wrestled with one another in the house before we went to
play. We were always in the best of spirits and our laughter was contagious.
Other neighbors who passed by our house often stopped in our yard and
joined us in laughter. As time went on, the rich man’s children became thin
and anemic, while we grew even more robust and full of life. Our faces were
bright and rosy, but theirs were pale and sad.
The rich man started to cough at night; then he coughed day and
night. His wife began coughing too. Then the children started to cough, one
after the other. At night their coughing sounded like the barking of a herd of
seals. We hung outside their windows and listened to them. We wondered
what happened. We knew that they were not sick from the lack of
nourishment because they were still always frying something delicious to
eat.
5. What do they do when the rich man’s servants
were frying and cooking?
6. According to the narrator, how did they become
healthy?
7. What happened to the rich man’s family as
the narrator’s family become healthy?
8. What will happen next?

15
One day the rich man appeared at a window and stood there a long
time. He looked at my sisters, who had grown fat in laughing, then at my
brothers, whose arms and legs were like the molave, which is the sturdiest
tree in the Philippines. He banged down the window and ran through his
house, shutting all the windows.
From that day on, the windows of our neighbor’s house were always
closed. The children did not come out anymore. We could still hear the
servants cooking in the kitchen, and no matter how tight the windows were
shut, the aroma of the food came to us in the wind and drifted gratuitously
into our house.
One morning a policeman from the presidencia came to our house
with a sealed paper. The rich man had filed a complaint against us. Father
took me with him when he went to the town clerk and asked him what it
was about. He told Father the man claimed that for years we had been
stealing the spirit of his wealth and food. When the day came for us to
appear in court, father brushed his old Army uniform and borrowed a pair of
shoes from one of my brothers. We were the first to arrive. Father sat on a
chair in the center of the courtroom. Mother occupied a chair by the door.
We children sat on a long bench by the wall. Father kept jumping up from
his chair and stabbing the air with his arms, as though we were defending
himself before an imaginary jury.
9. What was the rich man thinking while looking at the
members of the poor family?
10. Why do you think the windows of the rich man were
closed?
11. What was the rich man’s accusation against the
father?
12. What will happen next?

The rich man arrived. He had grown old and feeble; his face was
scarred with deep lines. With him was his young lawyer. Spectators came in
and almost filled the chairs. The judge entered the room and sat on a high
chair. We stood in a hurry and then sat down again. After the courtroom
preliminaries, the judge looked at the father.
“Do you have a lawyer?” he asked.

“I don’t need any lawyer, Judge,” he said.

“Proceed,” said the judge.

The rich man’s lawyer jumped up and pointed his finger at Father.

“Do you or you do not agree that you have been stealing the spirit of
the complaint’s wealth and food?”

16
“I do not!” Father said.

“Do you or do you not agree that while the complaint’s servants
cooked and fried fat legs of lamb or young chicken breast you and
your family hung outside his windows and inhaled the heavenly spirit
of the food?”

“I agree.” Father said.

Do you or do you not agree that while the complainant and his
children grew sickly and tubercular you and your family became strong of
limb and fair in complexion?

“I agree.” Father said.

“How do you account for that?”

Father got up and paced around, scratching his head thoughtfully.

Then he said, “I would like to see the children of complaint, Judge.”

“Bring in the children of the complaint.”

They came in shyly. The spectators covered their mouths with their
hands, they were so amazed to see the children so thin and pale. The
children walked silently to a bench and sat down without looking up. They
stared at the floor and moved their hands uneasily.
Father could not say anything at first. He just stood by his chair and
looked at them.

13. How does the rich man look like when he

appeared in the courtroom?
14. Do you think the questions of the rich man’s
lawyer were reasonable? Why?
15. What could be the intention of the rich man’s
lawyer in asking such questions?
16. What do you think Father was thinking upon
seeing the rich man’s children?
17. What will happen next?
Finally he said, “I should like to cross – examine the complaint.”

“Proceed.”

“Do you claim that we stole the spirit of your wealth and became a
laughing family while yours became morose and sad?” Father said.

“Yes.”

“Do you claim that we stole the spirit of your food by hanging outside
your windows when your servants cooked it?” Father said.

17
“Yes.”

“Then we are going to pay you right now,” Father said. He walked over
to where we children were sitting on the bench and took my straw hat off my
lap and began filling it up with centavo pieces that he took out of his
pockets. He went to Mother, who added a fistful of silver coins. My brothers
threw in their small change.
“May I walk to the room across the hall and stay there for a few
minutes, Judge?” Father said.

“As you wish.”

“Thank you,” father said. He strode into the other room with the hat in
his hands. It was almost full of coins.

18. What could be the reason why father filled the straw
hat with centavo pieces?
19. What will happen next?

The doors of both rooms were wide open.

“Are you ready?” Father called.

“Proceed.” The judge said.

The sweet tinkle of the coins carried beautifully in the courtroom. The
spectators turned their faces toward the sound with wonder. Father came
back and stood before the complaint.

“Did you hear it?” he asked.

“Hear what?” the man asked.

“The spirit of the money when I shook this hat?” he asked.

“Yes.”

“Then you are paid,” Father said.

The rich man opened his mouth to speak and fell to the floor without
a sound. The lawyer rushed to his aid. The judge pounded his gravel.

“Case dismissed.” He said.

Father strutted around the courtroom the judge even came down from
his high chair to shake hands with him. “By the way,” he whispered, “I had
an uncle who died laughing.”
“You like to hear my family laugh, Judge?” Father asked?

18
“Why not?”
“Did you hear that children?” father said.

My sisters started it. The rest of us followed them soon the spectators
were laughing with us, holding their bellies and bending over the chairs.
And the laughter of the judge was the loudest of all.

Are you done reading the passage? How was it? This is a nice story,
right? Make sure that you internalize and comprehend the entire story in
order for you to accomplish the next activity. But before you proceed, you
need to be oriented of what is narration and how to retell a story.

NARRATION is the art of storytelling.

RETELL means telling the most important parts of a story from beginning to
end.
In retelling a story, you must know the ff:
* Characters - the person/people (sometimes they are animals) the story is
about
* Setting – when and where did the story happen
*Conflict – struggle/ problem in the story
* Plot – the sequence of events that make up a story. (beginning to end)

Remember: In retelling a story, you can’t tell EVERYTHING, you can only retell
the most important parts and those are the elements above.

Watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w33-m8-geuM for other details

and example.

Now, I think you’re ready. So, let’s go!

DIRECTIONS: Complete the story map below, then video yourself while
retelling the story using your story map as your guide. Follow the
guidelines and rubric as your guide. Record your output using
any technology that you have and submit it to the class group
page created by the teacher for evaluation.
Remember:
Use the appropriate oral language, stance and behavior in
narrating events.
