USE ANALOGY

DESCRIBE OR
MELC: Make connections that help understand more and deeper the
concept of analogy especially in making, saying and describing a point.

I. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to;
1) Define analogy;
2) Identify the type of analogy used;
3) Supply the best word to complete an analogy; and
4) Use analogy to describe and make a point.

II. SUBJECT MATTER:


Topic: Using Analogy to Describe or Make a Point
Reference: English 7, Self-Learning Module, Module 6, Quarter 2
Materials: PowerPoint Presentation, activity sheets

III. PROCEDURE:
1. Daily Routine

A. Prayer
B. Greetings
C. Checking of attendance
D. Enumerate the rules in the class.

2. Activity:
A. Motivation: Match Maker, Be a Thinker!

The teacher will instruct the students what to do.


Let the students guess for the correct word that match perfectly
with the missing word in blank. Call students in random.
Let the student choose the correct answer from the pool of words on
the table and let the student paste it on the board.
Student who can rightly guess will receive a prize from the teacher.

B. Analysis:
 After the activity, let the students answer the following questions:
1. How are the pair of words related to each other.
2. Do you think we can describe someone or something by
comparing them with each other? Why?
 The teacher will explain briefly the answers on the motivation.
 Introduce the topic for today’s lesson.
 Let the students know the lesson’s objectives.

C. Abstraction:
 The teacher will now discuss about the topic, ANALOGY.
 Analogy comes from the Greek word Analogia which is a
combination of the prefix ana (upon, gain, or back) and a
suffix logus (ratio, word, or speech).
 Analogy is a comparison between two things. Two things are
being compared maybe very dissimilar but the analogy forces
the reader or the listener to understand the connection
between them. So, how do we read an analogy expression?
 Always remember that colons are part of the structure of
the analogy.
 Analogy Format: A : B :: C : D
 Give example of word analogy.
 Example:
red : stop :: green : ___________
 we read this as: red is to stop as green is to
blank
 It is used to describe or make a point about something by
examining its similarities with another thing.
 Examples:
1. Education is the key to success.
2. The health workers are as busy as the bees.
3. Ana is mistreated by her stepmother. She is indeed a
Cinderella.

 Explain the lesson further.


 Some of the common literary devices can be used as an
example of an analogy. These includes simile, metaphor,
and allegory.
 Types of analogy: As the definition of analogy includes
all types of comparisons, the following list of literary
devices all qualify as analogies.

1. SIMILE- It is a comparison of two things that are


essentially different, using the words like or as.
 Examples:
 My mother is sweet like sugar.
 She is as cold as ice.
 Her children are like diamonds.
2. METAPHOR- It is a comparison that describes a
person or using words that are not meant literally.
 Examples:
 Her children are her treasures.
 Books are his vacation.
 Grandmother’s lap is a soft pillow.
3. ALLEGORY- It is an expression by which the
characters and events are symbols that stand for
ideas about human life or for a political or historical
situation.
 Example:
 My intelligent classmate is the Einstein of the
class.

D. Application:
 The students are now going to perform an activity.
 The teacher will give the instructions to the students for them
to follow and be guided.

Activity 1:
o Directions: Identify the type of analogies of the given

in your answer sheets.

E. Generalization:
 Writers use an analogy to connect unfamiliar words or new
ideas with common and unfamiliar objects. It functions as a
description or explanation of one thing by examining its
similarities and differences which forces the readers to
understand the connection between them
