The single colon (:) represents the phrase “is
to”, and the double colon (::) represents the
word “as”.
sad: lonely :: beautiful : pretty.

Thus, it is read a sad is to lonely as beautiful


is to pretty.
ANALOGY

have similar features, often used to help
explain a principle or idea.

The two things being compared may be


completely dissimilar which still helps you
to understand something about their
relationship.
