Welcome to the Quarter 2 English 7 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module 1 on,
Using listening strategies based on purpose, familiarity with the topic and levels of
difficulty of short texts listened to.
This module presents different learning activities in identifying the specific type of
listening and using appropriate listening style which will help you strategize well your
purpose in listening.

This is designed to provide you with enjoyable and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own level and time. You will be enabled to process
the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.

What I Need to Know

Listening is one of the skills you use the most in everyday life. Listening comprehension
is the basis for your speaking, writing, and reading skills. To train your listening skills, it is
important to listen actively which means to actively pay attention to what you are listening to.
Make it a habit to listen news, songs, watch videos and films for you to become a better

After working on this module, you are expected to use listening strategies based on
purpose, familiarity with the topic and levels of difficulty of short text listened to (EN7LC-IIa-
6). Specifically, you should be able to:

1. identify the different strategies of listening;


2. use appropriate listening strategy to extract information from the text listened to;
3. appreciate the song by giving its message;
4. display fairness in listening in any situation.

Activity 2: Let’s read!

Directions: Read the conversation below then be able to answer the


question which follows:

Bayani was very quiet as Doctor Gomez gave him a physical examination. The
doctor looked at the boy’s throat, took his temperature, and listened to his heart. Finally, he
asked Bayani a few questions.

Dr. Gomez : When did you begin to feel bad?


Bayani : This morning when I got up.
Dr. Gomez : What did you eat for breakfast?
Bayani : I had fried rice, paksiw, and a scrambled egg.
Dr. Gomez : I see. How do you feel now?
Bayani : Terrible. I think I’m going to die.
Dr. Gomez : You won’t die. In fact, you’ll be fine by supper time.
Mrs. Cruz : (looking happy) Oh, Doctor! Do you really think so?
Dr. Gomez : Your son is simply tense. Boys of his age suffer from this at this time.
Mrs. Cruz : Why do you think so?
Dr. Gomez : The championship basketball game which will be on TV in an hour is
keeping him very anxious. Bayani will be fine when the game is over.

What is It

In listening activities, it is important to recall the different listening strategies.


Identifying the specific type of listening will help you strategize well your purpose in listening.
Study the different type of listening below:

1. Attentive Listening

- People listen to understand a message, to follow instructions or to get


information; this is the type of listening required in many instructional activities.

2. Selective Listening

- People listen only to items which they prefer to listen to. For example, noting the
rhythm and the rhyme scheme of a poem.

3. Critical Listening

- People listen first to comprehend and then to evaluate a message to detect


propaganda devices and persuasive language; people listen critically to debates,
political speeches, commercials, and other arguments.

4. Appreciative Listening
- People listen for enjoyment which includes listening to music, to jokes, and to
stories and poems read aloud.

5. Marginal Listening
- People don’t have any specific focus when they do this type of listening.
