What is It

We all love to watch movies, videos or shows on TV. Now, we will discover
the genre of the shows or videos that we love to watch. Isn’t it great that you will
finally know the genre of the material you viewed?

15
We will also learn about the purpose, intended audience and the features of
these viewing materials.
Now you might be asking, what is genre?

Genre - a class or category of artistic endeavor having a particular form,

content, technique, or the like.
Yeah I know it surely sounds even more confusing now. Genre in simpler
word is a class or a group wherein the members have the same characteristics,
qualities, content, styles and the like. Just like in music, songs belong to a
particular genre like kpop, pop rock, kundiman and so much more. One prefers
more than the other.

This time we are going to learn more about the materials we usually watch.
We will know the different genres of these videos or shows.

These are the different genres we have to learn:

1. Movie Clip- are short clips of video, usually part of a longer recording. Video
clips is a snippet of another long video. Duration of a video clip can range from few
seconds to a minute.
As an example found in the conversation of friend in the activity earlier, the part of
the movie frozen where Elsa was singing Let It Go. It is a part of a longer recording
which is the movie Frozen.

Now these movies or shows could fall under different categories. It could be
drama, comedy or action. You may have an idea of what are these shows about but
let me add to that.

Drama – is a play, movie, or television production with a serious tone or

subject. It has characters that tells us a story, unfolding to us the plot of which
involves conflicts.

Example of this would be KadenangGinto, Frozen, May Bukas pa and the like.

Comedy- a drama of light and amusing character and typically with a happy
ending. Compared to drama this one is on the lighter side. It is humorous
entertainment. This makes you laugh like GoinBulilit, Banana Sundae, Bubble
Gang and many others.

Action-a film genre where action sequences, such as fighting, stunts, car
chases or explosions, take precedence over elements like characterization or
complex plotting. The action typically involves individual efforts on the part of the
hero, in contrast with most war films. Examples of which would be FPJ’s Ang
Probinsyano, The General’s Daughter, Heneral Luna and many others.

You may have other categories or genres in mind. List them down and
search their definition for additional insights.

16
2. Trailer- a selected group of scenes that are shown to advertise a movie.
This is often shown for the audience to get excited for an upcoming film or series.
This genre of material is often short and will only show the selected scenes which
does not reveal the entire plot. Watch an example of a trailer through this link
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRUAzGQ3nSY.
3. News Flash- a single item of important news that is aired separately and
interrupts other programs. These are the news that are very important and urgent
that the regular shows would get interrupted for this to be shown. Example of this
would be the Breaking News and 24 Oras News Alert. Here’s the link of a new flash
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmUlbk8pX44.

BREAKING
NEWS
4. Internet-based Program- these are the programs you can only access with
the use of internet, like YouTube and many more. If you know more examples of
this kindly list them down on your notebook.

5. Documentary - (of a movie, a television or radio program, or photography)

using pictures or interviews with people involved in real events to provide a factual
record or report. These are reports about real situation and real people. Examples
are I-witness, Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho and Failonngayon. If you know more
documentary shows list it down in your notebook.

If you want to watch just open this

linkhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8o7WBddDYrU.

We already know the genre of the movies or shows we love to watch. This time
we will discover their purpose.

Purpose- something set up as an object or end to be attained. In other words,

intention. The purpose of the author/writer towards his/her audience.
1.To inform- to provide reliable data to its viewers. Examples would be from a
news flash and documentary.

2. To entertain- the show or the video will serve as a recreation to the viewers.
Examples would be from comedy, internet-based program like tiktok, movie clips
and trailers.

We would like to know which set of audience are intended to watch these shows.
Note that it is only the intended set of audience, that doesn’t mean that the
show/video will be limited to them. It is still open to all viewers.

17
For instance, a cooking show’s intended audience would be chefs, mothers
and even those who are trying to cook. As for the animated shows, cartoons,
nursery rhymes and educational shows, we could presume that these shows are
intended for kids. News, documentary, weather reports, drama, comedy would be
intended for the general public.
For better guidance, for instance in our country we have MTRCB (Movie and
Television Review and Classification Board). The MTRCB is a quasi-judicial
government agency under the Office of the President, which is responsible for the
review and classification of television programs, movies and publicity materials.

If you have been watching television shows, you can observe that before the
show starts there is a three-second advisory announcing the classification of a
show or movie or trailer.

For movie classification ratings:

Age-verification process:
• “G” - no need for age-verification

• “PG” - patron below 13 years old should be accompanied by a responsible

adult
• “R-13” - no patron below 13 years old

• “R-16” - no patron below16 years old

• “R-18” - no patron below 18 years old

For television classification ratings:

Monitor television content which may be classified only as:

• “G” or GENERAL AUDIENCE – Suitable for all ages. Does not contain
anything unsuitable for children, and safe to be viewed without adult
guidance or supervision.

• “PG” or PARENTAL GUIDANCE – Parental Guidance may contain some

adult material but may be permissible for children to watch under the
guidance and supervision of a parent or an adult.

18
• “SPG” or STRONG PARENTAL GUIDANCE – May contain more serious
topic and theme. May not be advisable for children to watch thus requiring
greater parental responsibility.

Classification of the MTRCB for Television are color-coded as follows:

• Green for “G”

• Blue for “PG”

• Red for “SPG”
