BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

IP Address

An IP address is a unique address that identifies a gadget on the internet or a neighborhood network. IP
stands for "Internet Protocol," which is the set of guidelines governing the structure of information
dispatched by way of the web or nearby network. Like the street address for your home, an IP address
identifies network computers that allows information to be sent between gadgets on a network: they
comprise region records and make devices handy for communication. The IP address allows the
computers to send and receive information while connected to the internet. The net needs a way to
differentiate between one-of-a-kind computers, routers, and websites. IP addresses furnish a way of doing
so and form a crucial phase of how the web works
What is an IP?

An IP address is a string of numbers break up by using periods. It expressed as a set of 4 numbers — a

pattern may be 192.158.1.190. Every set of numbers can vary from zero to 255. So, IP scale goes from
0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255. IP addresses are not random. They are mathematically produced and allocated
by using the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), a division of the Internet Corporation for
Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). ICANN is a non-profit organization that used to be established
in the United States in 1998 to help hold the safety of the web and allow it to be usable through all. Each
time it registers an area on the internet, they go thru a domain name registrar, who will pay a small rate to
ICANN to register the domain.

How do IP addresses work?

If you desire to understand why a precise system is now not connecting in the way you would assume or
you favor to troubleshoot why your community may now not be working, it helps understand how IP
addresses work.

Internet Protocol works the same way as any different language, by way of communicating the usage of
set recommendations to omit information. All units find, send, and trade data with different linked
gadgets the use of this protocol. By talking the equal language, any computer in any vicinity can talk to
one another.
The use of IP addresses typically happens behind the scenes. The process works like this:

1. Your device indirectly connects to the internet by connecting at first to a network connected to
the internet, which then grants your device access to the internet.
2. When you are at home, that network will probably be your Internet Service Provider (ISP). At
work, it will be your company network.
3. Your IP address is assigned to your device by your ISP.
4. Your internet activity goes through the ISP, and they route it back to you, using your IP address.
Since they are giving you access to the internet, it is their role to assign an IP address to your
device.
5. However, your IP address can change. For example, turning your modem or router on or off can
change it. Or you can contact your ISP, and they can change it for you.
6. When you are out and about – for example, traveling – and you take your device with you, your
home IP address does not come with you. This is because you will be using another network (Wi-
Fi at a hotel, airport, or coffee shop, etc.) to access the internet and will be using a different (and
temporary) IP address, assigned to you by the ISP of the hotel, airport or coffee shop.

Public IP addresses come in two forms – dynamic and static.

Dynamic IP addresses

Dynamic IP addresses exchange mechanically and regularly. ISPs buy a large pool of IP addresses and
assign them robotically to their customers. Periodically, they re-assign them and put the older IP
addresses returned into the pool to be used for particular customers. The intent for this technique is to
generate fee economic financial savings for the ISP. Automating the everyday action of IP addresses
performance they don’t have to raise out distinctive strikes to re-establish a customer's IP address if they
go home, for example. There are protection benefits, too, due to the fact a altering IP handle makes it
tougher for criminals to hack into your community interface.

Static IP addresses

In distinction to dynamic IP addresses, static addresses remain consistent. Once the network assigns an IP
address, it stays the same. Most individual and agencies do not need a static IP address, but for
organizations that design to host their own server, it is crucial to have one. This is due to the fact a static
IP address ensures that web sites and e-mail addresses tied to it will have a consistent IP address —
imperative if you choose other units to be capable to locate them persistently on the web.

SETTING UP DYNAMIC IP ADDRESS

STEP 1: Type “Settings” in the Start Menu and Click Open.
STEP 2: Click Network & Internet

STEP 3: Click change adapter option.

STEP 4: Select the active connection (Its either LAN or Wifi), right click and click properties.
STEP 5: Click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and hit Properties.

STEP 6: Click “Obtain an IP Address automatically” and click OK

STEP 7: To check if the IP Address change to dynamic, Type CMD in the start button and click Open.
STEP 8: Type “ipconfig” and hit enter.

STEP 9: You notice that the IP Address 192.168.1.8.0 was assigned automatically by the network
including the Default Gateway of the network which is 192.168.1.1.

SETTING UP STATIC IP ADDRESS

STEP 1: Type “Settings” in the Start Menu and Click Open.
STEP 2: Click Network & Internet

STEP 3: Click change adapter option.

STEP 4: Select the active connection (Its either LAN or Wifi), right click and click properties.
STEP 5: Click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and hit Properties.

STEP 6: Click “Use the following IP Address and type your preferred IP address, in this case, I typed
192.168.1.150 then click OK
STEP 7: To check if the IP Address change to static, Type CMD in the start button and click Open.

STEP 8: Type “ipconfig” and hit enter.

STEP 9: You notice that the IP Address 192.168.1.8.0 was assigned by the user and not by the network.
The default gateway hides automatically.
