CASE STUDY

Q1. Explain the school of thought that suits best with the case study and why? 5 marks (400
Words)
Answer:
The school of thought that suits best with this case is The Psychological School Of Thought. Ted
Bundy grew up in a family that lacked affection towards him. During his childhood, Ted considered
his mother to be his sister because Ted's grandparents were ashamed of their daughter who was
pregnant out of wedlock. Ted’s grandparents raised him as their own child not their grandson so
during his childhood Ted’s didn’t know that his sister was actually his mother. But,that doesn’t mean
Ted’s get love and affection like a family in general. Ted’s grandfather used to abused him and his
mother regularly, until Ted’s was five years old his mother took him and run away from their home
to live with their cousin in Washington. It didn’t take long for his mother to be married, his step-
father legally adopt Ted’s. But,growing up Ted’s didn’t like his step-father at all. he consider his
step-father wasn’t very smart and didn’t make much money to support Ted and his mother. Growing
up Ted’s life is full of dark fantasies and affected him so much he grew up to be a loner. Based on
Ted’s childhood background,in my opinion its very influential on how he became a ‘psycopath’ and
a criminal. I’m taking Blackburn Claims to support my opinion :

1. Impaired parent–infant relationships are causally related to later criminal behaviour e.g Ted’s
and his mother didn’t have a strong bond between each other, they do not have a relationship as
should the relationship between mother and child see from the fact that ted during his childhood
assumed that his mother was his sister. And when he has a stepfather, they don't have a strong
bond either. So it's very clear that Ted doesn't have the parent figure he needs as he grew up he
doesn't have a good example to emulates so in my opinion this is a factor that causes Ted to
become a criminal.

2. Unconscious conflicts arising from disturbed family relationships at different stages of

development – particularly the Oedipal stage – are the causes of some criminal acts e.g Seeing
the fact of the family's situation during Ted's growth, Ted's family is not a harmonious family
because he was a victim of abuse during his childhood because the abuse conflict experienced
by ted does not support Ted's psychological development and leads him to become a criminal.
Q2.  Analyse the role of environmental criminology with the respective case study? 3 marks
(300 Words)
Answer:
Looking from the background on how Ted’s did his “action”, the role of environmental criminology
in this case in my opinion its suits in Crime Pattern Theory. Ted’s have a criteria for his victims or
places for him to carry out his “action”. In some of his cases,he broke in into apartment and sorority
house. When viewed from both places its very possible that the places is lack of surveillance
because its easy for Ted’s to break into both places. Especially in the Chi Omega Sorority House,
the structure of the sorority house is like a house in general. There was no special structure or
security protocol to prevent any crime, even looking from the year when case occurred which is in
1978 it is very possible if the sorority house doesn’t have a CCTV. Also looking at Ted’s victims
who were mostly college students and he used to be college student it is very possible for Ted’s to
chose his victims who in the same university as he is. Its very possible for them to met or in a same
place together and it triggered Ted’s to target them to be his victims. He developed a technique to
approach his victims by wearing a cast otherwise disabled and asking them for help him to put
something in his car. And looking at his technique bringing his victims to his car which is very
certain that he parked his car in a place far from crowds and there is no capable guardian. He even
chose the places that is far from crowds to dump his victims bodies like woods, farm, even in his
apartment. The motive he used is to make the crime that he committed not detected and made it
difficult for the agencies to find the culprit.

Q3.  Explain the emerging post modern criminology in the trail and investigation of the case?
2 marks (200 Words)
Answer:
The emerging post modern criminology in this case is there is a certain Labelling attached to Ted
Bundy, based on a statement in the case “they dismissed Ted Bundy as a suspect, thinking it unlikely
that a clean-cut law student with no adult criminal record could be the perpetrator; he didn’t fit the
profile. These types of judgments benefitted Ted Bundy many times throughout his murderous
career as one of history’s most infamous serial killers”

Because of the Stereotype that Ted’s is a law student with a clean-cut appearance and he also has no
criminal records whatsoever this Stereotype makes law agencies distrust if Ted’s is a suspect in this
case. Ted’s also didn’t show a strange behaviour that makes law agencies suspicious towards him.
Because of this Stereotype make Ted’s not a suspect and not investigated by the law agencies so
Ted’s remains free to do his “action” without anyone believing that he is the actual suspect because
of this Labelling. And even after his trial the label is still attached to him. He got label as one of the
most infamous and terrifying serial killers in American history and perhaps “the very definition of
heartless evil.”
