QUESTION 1 [25]

a. In analyzing coal samples for proximate and ultimate analysis, a particle size of 75 microns is
required. Give detailed steps on how you get 75 microns samples from a given col lump.

b. A mixture of quartz and galena of a size range from 0.015 mm to 0.065 mm is to be separated
into two pure fractions using hindered settling process. What is the minimum apparent density
of the fluid that will give this separation? How will the viscosity of the bed affect the minimum
required density? The density of galena is 7500 kg/m 3 and the density of quartz is 2650 kg/m 3.

QUESTION 2

a. What is the difference between terminal velocity and settling velocity?

b. Solid spherical particles of Coffee from a dryer having a diameter of 400 microns are falling
through air at a temperature of 422 K. The density of the particles is 1030 Kg/m 3. Calculate the
terminal settling velocity and the distance of fall in 5s. The pressure is 101.3 kPa.
