• Write roll number, subject code and subject name at the top of answer sheet.
• Do signature with date at the bottom of each page.

1. Define in detail types of size reduction equipments used in chemical industries and their
principle of size reduction. (10 Marks)
2. Explain the filteration mechanisum and equipments is being used in chemical process
industries.
3. Explain the lean and dense phase fluidization. (5 Marks)
4. Calculate the settling velocity of glass spheres having a diameter of 1.554 x 10-4 m in water
at 20 oC. The slurry contains 60 weight percentage of solids. The density of the glass
spheres is 2467 kg/m3. (10 Marks)
Density of water is 998 kg/m3, viscosity of water is 1.005 x 10-3 Pa-s.
5. A vaccum leaf filter gives a total volume of 10 m3 of filter in 30 minutes. Assuming that
the resistance of filter cloth is negligible, find the time taken for the collection of 20 m3 and
30 m3 of filtrate. (10 Marks)
6. A mixture of silica (B) and Galena (A) solid particles moving a size range of 5.21x10-6 m
to 2.5 x10-5 m is to be separated by hydraulic classification using free settling conditions in
water at 20 oC. The Specific gravity of silica is 2.65 and that of galena is 7.5. Calculate the
size range of the various fractions obtained in the settling. If the settling is in the laminar
region, the drag coefficient will be reasonably close to that for sphere. (15 Marks)
