Concrete Technology
Time: 3 Hours Max. Marks: 100
Note : 1. Question No. 1 is Compulsory.
2. Answer any 4 full questions from question No. 2 to Question No. 6.
3. Use of IS:10262-2009 is permitted.

1 a) Write only flow chart of manufacture of cement by dry process.


b) Name the two alkali oxides formed in cement in the kiln.
c) What are the advantages and disadvantages of CaOH2 in concrete?
d) What is the bound water? And how much of it is usually present in cement concrete?
e) Mention the 5 types of shrinkage in concrete.
f) Explain thermal diffusivity and relate it to conductivity in concrete.
g) What is entrained air and entrapped air concrete?
h) A concrete mix with 50mm slump is filled into concrete pump for placing to a roof slab.
What is your comment on the next sequence of concreting?
i) What is PPC? For what purpose of concreting, it is mostly recommended?
j) Name the type of cement to be used for mass concrete and grouting operations. 2  10

2 a) Write a note on calcium silicate hydrates in concrete in detail. 8


b) Concreting is required to be carried out in cold weather for a busy traffic road. What type of
cements can be best used? Justify their use with their properties. 6
c) How do you understand soundness in cement? Explain the simple test for its measurement in
the laboratory with neat sketches. 6

3 a) What is workability? Why and how do you measure it? Explain the factors affecting
workability. 8
b) How is bleeding different from segregation? Explain the test for measuring bleeding water. 8
c) A bag of cement is given to you and 1:2:4 concrete by volume batching is to be prepared
using full bag. How much of CA and FA is to be used in liters. Water/cement ratio is 0.35.
How much of water is added in liters? 4

4 a) How the strength of concrete and water-cement ratio are related? Explain using Abrams and
Feret’s equations. Draw the necessary graph of relationship between compressive strength
and water-cement ratio. 8
b) Calculate the theoretical strength of a sample of concrete made with 600gm of cement with
0.45 water-cement ratio on.
i) Full hydration.
ii) 60% hydration. 6
c) Explain the effect of maximum size of aggregates on compressive strength and tensile
strength of concrete. 6

5 a) State the different moduli of elasticity of concrete. Explain them with significance of each
one of them. 8

b) Describe the concept of creep in concrete. What are the factors affecting the creep? Explain in
detail. 6

c) Explain the concept of carbonation in concrete and how does it abet chloride attack on steel? 6

6 Design a concrete mix of M30 grade of the following data as per IS 10262-2009:
Max. size of CA : 20mm, crushes angular.
Max and min. cement content : 450 and 300kg/m3.
Exposure condition : Moderate.
Workability: 100mm slump.
Method of placing : Pumping, Quality control: Good
Chemical admixture : Super plasticizer of sp.gr – 1.145.
Test data for materials:
Cement : OPC 43 grade, Specific gravity : 3.21.
Flyash: 24% of cementations content, Sp.gr = 2.15
CA: Sp.gr = 2.65, water absorption = 0.5%
FA: Sp.gr = 2.70, water absorption = 1.2%
FA length to zone II of IS 383. 20
