3 a) What is workability? Why and how do you measure it? Explain the factors affecting
workability. 8
b) How is bleeding different from segregation? Explain the test for measuring bleeding water. 8
c) A bag of cement is given to you and 1:2:4 concrete by volume batching is to be prepared
using full bag. How much of CA and FA is to be used in liters. Water/cement ratio is 0.35.
How much of water is added in liters? 4
4 a) How the strength of concrete and water-cement ratio are related? Explain using Abrams and
Feret’s equations. Draw the necessary graph of relationship between compressive strength
and water-cement ratio. 8
b) Calculate the theoretical strength of a sample of concrete made with 600gm of cement with
0.45 water-cement ratio on.

c) Explain the effect of maximum size of aggregates on compressive strength and tensile
strength of concrete. 6
5 a) State the different moduli of elasticity of concrete. Explain them with significance of each
one of them. 8
c) Explain the concept of carbonation in concrete and how does it abet chloride attack on steel? 6
6 Design a concrete mix of M30 grade of the following data as per IS 10262-2009:
Max. size of CA : 20mm, crushes angular.
Max and min. cement content : 450 and 300kg/m3.
Exposure condition : Moderate.
Workability: 100mm slump.
Method of placing : Pumping, Quality control: Good
Chemical admixture : Super plasticizer of sp.gr – 1.145.
Test data for materials:
Cement : OPC 43 grade, Specific gravity : 3.21.
Flyash: 24% of cementations content, Sp.gr = 2.15
CA: Sp.gr = 2.65, water absorption = 0.5%
FA: Sp.gr = 2.70, water absorption = 1.2%
FA length to zone II of IS 383. 20
