1 Roll.No. kW has to be supplied for crushing a material from 1.20 cm cubes 2 AP 5

to a product having the
following sizes :
80% - 0.30 cm
10% - 0.25 cm
10% - 0.20 cm
Calculate the power required to this machine at the same rate for the same
material from 0.75 to 0.15 cm cube.
2 A certain crusher takes rock whose average particle diameter is 0.025m 2 AP 5
crushes it to a product whose average particle diameter is 0.025m crushes
it to a product whose average particle diameter is 0.018m at the rate of
100 x Roll.No. kg/h. At this rate, the mill takes 684 kgf m/s of power and
35 kgf m/s power is required to run it empty.
(i) What would be the power consumption for same capacity if the average
particle diameter in the product is 0.008m?
(ii) How much power would be required under conditions by Kick’s law?

3 An aqueous slurry containing 0.1 x Roll.No % by weight solids (sp.gr=2.0) 3 AP 15

is to be clarifies by continuous sedimentation. Feed to the thickener is
3600 m3 per day and the underflow from the unit analyzes 10% solids.
Specify the diameter of the thickener. A batch sedimentation test on the
feed material gave the following information
Time, 0 5 10 20 40 60 180 240 ∞

4 An industrial sludge at a concentration of Roll.No. kg per cubic meter of 4 AP 10
filtrate is to be filtered in a filter press operating at 5 bar. The experiment
on the same slurry estimated a cake resistance of 8.3 ×1010 m/kg and filter
medium resistance of 7.8 × 10 10 m-1.
Determine the surface area of the filter needed to give 80 kg of dry cake
per hour. The viscosity of water at 30°C is 0.8 cP. The cake is assumed to
be incompressible. The density of solids is 1985 kg/ m 3. Density of water
is 1000 kg/m3.
5 A six bladed turbine of diameter 0.3 m is used to process liquid in an 5 AN 5
agitation tank of volume 1000 litres. The tank is fitted with 4 baffles. The
height of the tank is 1.27 m and its diameter is 1 m. Find the power required
to operation the impeller at a speed of 10 x Roll.No rpm. The liquid density
is 900 kg/m3 and viscosity is 2 cp.
(Data: KL and KT configuration of mixing tank and impeller can be taken
from reference graph).
