1. A process projected to have a total depreciable capital, CTDC, of $90 million, with no allocated
costs for off-site utilities, is to be installed over a 3-yr period (1997-1999). Just prior to start-up, $40
million of working capital is required. At 90% of production capacity (projected for the third and
subsequent operating years), sales revenues, S, are projected to be $150 million/yr and the total
annual production cost excluding depreciation is projected to be $100 million/yr. Also, the plant is
projected to operate at 0.5 of 90% and 0.75 of 90% of capacity during the first and second operating
years. Thus during those years, S= $75 million/yr and $113 million/yr, respectively. Take straight-
line depreciation at 8%/yr. Using the third operating year as a basic, compute:
a. Return on investment (ROI)
b. Payback period (PBP).
2. An aqueous glucose stream is to be catalytically hydrogenated to sorbitol in a slurry tank reactor.
Feeds to the reactor are an aqueous glucose stream with a concentration of 2.6 kg mol/m 3 at a flow
rate of 10-3 m3/s and a 120 percent of stoichiometric hydrogen gas stream. The reactor is to be
operated isothermally at 423 K, where the reaction is observed to follow the kinetics shown here:

The reaction is conducted at 10,000 kPa, the solubility of hydrogen may be assumed to be 5 kg mol/m 3 at
this pressure.
The actual kinetics of the reaction require adjustment to account for catalyst masstransfer effects.
Neglecting these effects, calculate the conversion for a 2-m 3 CSTR.

3. Find the cost of the following reactor; The reactor will be cylindrical with a 2.74 m inside
diameter and a length of 9.15 m. It will be constructed of carbon steel and will operate at a
temperature of 670 K and an internal pressure of 690 kPa gauge. There are no major
cooling or heating needs and no special internal accessories. Heads for the reactor will be
hemispherical. The corrosion allowance for the wall thickness is 0.0032 m. For carbon
steel at 670 K the stress value is 82000 kPa and joint efficiency is 0.85.
Include 15% increase for nozzles, manholes and saddles. Density of steel is 7840 kg/m3
