Subject: - Fundamentals of Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer (ME452)

 Candidates are required to give their answers in their own words as far as practicable.
 Attempt ANY THREE questions.
 The figures in the margin indicate Full Marks.
 Assume suitable data if necessary.

1. A 2 m long steel plate (k =50 W /mK ) is well insulated on its sides, while its left section is
maintained at 1000 C and the right section is exposed to ambient air at 200 C . Under steady
state conditions, a thermocouple inserted at the middle of the plate gives a temperature of
0
80 C . Determine the value of convection heat transfer coefficient for convection heat
transfer between the right section of the plate and air. [6]
2. How would you classify the thermodynamics cycles? Explain with examples. [6]
3. An air standard Diesel cycle has a compression ratio of 18, and the heat transferred to the
working fluid per cycle is 1800 kJ/kg. At the beginning of the compression process, the
pressure is 0.1 MPa and the temperature is 150. Determine: [6]
a. Maximum pressure and temperature of the cycle
b. Thermal efficiency, and
c. Mean effective pressure.
4. The conditions of steam at entrance and exit of a turbine are: h1=3456.5 kJ/kg, s1=7.2338
kJ/kgK, and velocity of 150 m/s; h2=2792.8 kJ/kg, s2=7.4665 kJ/kgK, velocity of 100 m/s
respectively. The work output per kg of the steam flow is 600 kJ/kg. Heat is transferred to the
surrounding at 500K. Determine the entropy generation per kg steam flow. [6]
