SAQ #1
1. At the start of an air-standard Otto cycle's compression process, P 1 = 1 bar, T1 = 300 K, V1 =
380 cm3. The maximum temperature in the cycle is 2400 K and the compression ratio is 9.
Determine the (a) heat addition, in kJ, (b) the net-work in kJ, (c) the thermal efficiency, (d) the
mean effective pressure, in bar.
2. The compression ratio of an air-standard Otto cycle is 7.5. P1 = 85 kPa and T1 = 32 C at the
start of compression. The highest temperature in the cycle is 960 K, and the mass of air is 3
determine the (a) the heat rejection, in kJ, (b) the network, in kJ (c) the thermal efficiency, and
the (d) mean effective pressure, in kPa.
3. The compression ratio of an ideal Otto cycle is 8. Air is 95 kPa and 27 C at the start of the
compression operation, and 750 kJ/kg of heat is transferred to air during the constant-volume
heat-addition process. The variation of specific heats with temperature, determine (a) the
pressure and temperature at the end of the heat-addition process, (b) the net work output, (c)
the thermal efficiency, and (d) the mean effective pressure for the cycle.
4. A six-cylinder, four-stroke, spark-ignition engine working on the ideal Otto cycle draws in air at
14 psia and 105 degrees Fahrenheit and has a maximum cycle temperature of 2400 degrees
Fahrenheit. Each cylinder has a diameter of 3.5 inches and a stroke of 3.9 inches. The minimum
enclosed volume is 9.8 percent of the maximum enclosed volume. How much power will this
engine produce when operated at 2500 rpm? Use cold air standard assumption.
