B.E. (Electrical)/Third Semester/Final Time: 01:30 hrs. (+2 Hrs. for Submission) Full Marks: 40 /Pass Marks: 16 BEG249ME: Fundamental of Thermodynamics and Heat Instructions: Dear Students! • This model of examination is for you as the end of your current semester. This examination allows you to write answer from your own place of residence. Follow the following instructions without fail. • Do not write your name in the answer-sheet(s) • All the answer-sheets should be sent to college through your approved email in which you have received your question paper. • Do not write questions in the answer-sheet but mention clearly the question number. • All the scan/photos of answer-sheets should be clearly visible. Any blur scan/photo will not be considered for evaluation. Responsibility lies with the students to make sure that scan/photos of the answer-sheet are of readable quality. • Leave 1 inch margin on each side of the answer-sheet. • Clearly mention your Roll no, subject, program, semester, page number at the right-top of each page as instructed by the Office of the Examination Management. • Make sure that you send your answer-sheets within the given time. Any email received after the given time will not be acceptable. • You are strictly advised to write with your own handwriting and that you are not using any unfair means to answer the questions. • Do not consult during the examination period to any other person in answering the questions. • Do not post any pictures of taking examination or your answer-sheets in any social-media. Found that may be taken action from University. All questions carry equal marks. The marks allotted for each sub-question is specified along its side. Answer ALL questions. 1. Explain thermodynamics cycle and derive work done during adiabatic process. 4 2(a) Show that different values of polytropic index lead to different thermodynamic process. 3 (b) Define closed system. Differentiate between extensive properties and intensive properties. 3 3. Define saturation temperature and degree of superheat. A rigid tank contains steam at 200 KPa. One third of the volume is in liquid phase and rest in the vapor form. Determine the specific volume. 4 4(a) Air expands through an adiabatic turbine from 1 bar, 1000K to 0.1bar and 400K. The inlet velocity is 10 m/s whereas exit velocity is 100m/s. The power output turbine is 3600 KW. Determine inlet and exit diameters. (Take R = 287 J/KgK, Cp= 1005 J/kgk). 6 (b) State limitations of first law of thermodynamics. 2 5(a) Derive an efficiency of otto-cycle with P-V diagram. 3 (b) Two kg of water at 90°C is mixed with three kg of water at 10ºC in an isolated system. Calculate change of entropy due to the mixing process. [C for water=4.18kJ/kgK]. 5 6. A air standard standard Otto cycle has a compression ratio of 10. At the beginning of compression stroke, the pressure and temperature are 100 Kya and 20°C. The peak temperature during the cycle is 2000 K. Calculate pressure and temperature at the end of each process of cycle. And thermal efficiency. 5 7. Define Critical radius. An exterior wall of a house consists of 10 cm of common brick (k=0.8 W/mK) followed by a 4 cm layer of gypsum plaster (k=0.5 W/mK). What thickness of rock wool insulation (k=0.065 W/mK) should be added to reduce the heat transfer through the wall by 60 %. 5 KJ/Kg KJ/k m3/kg Pin bar T in ºC hf hg Sf sg uf ug 0.1 45.8 191.8 2584.7 0.649 8.150 0.001010 14.67 0.4 75.9 317.7 2636.9 1.0261 7.6709 0.001026 3.993 1 99.6 417.5 2675.4 1.3027 7.3694 0.001043 1.694
