1. (a) Obtain the inverse Laplace transform of

(b) Find the Laplace transform F(s) of the function f (t) shown in Figure Q1(b), where f( t ) = 0 for t < 0 and 2a ≤
t. Also find the limiting value of F(s) as a approaches zero.

(c) Obtain the transfer functions X1( s ) /U( s ) and X2( s )/U( s ) of the mechanical system shown in Figure Q1(c).

2. (a) Figures Q2(a) shows a mechanical vibratory system. When 2 lb of force (step input) is applied to the system, the mass
oscillates, as shown in Figure Q2(b) Determine m, b, and k of the system from this response curve. The displacement x
is measured from the equilibrium position.

(b) Linearize the nonlinear equation

𝑍 = 𝑥 2 + 8xy + 3𝑦 2
in the region 3 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 5, 10 ≤ 𝑦 ≤ 12.

(c) Determine impulse responses of standard second-order overdamped systems.

3. A. Using Block diagram reduction technique find the unity feedback system that is equivalent to the system shown in
Fig. Q3.

B. A spring-mass system with mass 3, damping 4, and spring constant 8 is subjected to a hammer blow at time t = 0.
The blow imparts a total impulse of 1 to the system, which was initially at rest. Find the response of the system.

C. A unit impulse is applied to the mass in a spring-mass-damper system, initially at equilibrium, and you observe the
system respond as x(t) = e−3t sin(4t). What are the physical parameters mass, damping coefficient and spring
constant?
