Chapter 6 : Multiple Evaporator and Compressor Systems 26

Mass of refrigerant required to be circulated through the second evaporator.

210 Q2 _ 210x 20 .
mz = ~ -h10 - 189.65-45.37 29 1
= · kg/nun
Mass of refrigerant required in the flash intercooler at point 10 for desuperheating the
aperheated vapour refrigerant mel = 44.2 kg/min coming from first compressor, to the dry
sarurated condition as at point 3 is

~' = mc1(h,. -~) = 44.2(194.1-189.65) =1.36 kg/min

~ -Ja.0 189.65-45.37
The second evaporator is also supplied with vapours formed during expansion of
d = 44.2 kg/min refrigerant while passing through the second expansion valve.
=
:. Mass of vapours formed by mel 44.2 kg/min while passing through the second
expansion valve,

"'2~' = mel
(
Xto
1-x10
) =44.2 ( 1-0.04
0.04 ) = 1.84 kg/min

:. Total mass of refrigerant passing through the second compressor,

mc2 = mel + mz + mz' + mz"
= 44.2 + 29.1 + 1.36 + 1.84 =76.5 kg/min Ans.
Now, mass of refrigerant required to be circulated through the third evaporator,
210 Q3 210x10
m3 = hs -hs = 191.74-64.59 = 16.5 kg/min
Mass of refrigerant required in the flash intercooler at point 8 for desuperheating the
superheated vapour refrigerant mcz = 76.5 kg/min coming from the second compressor to the dry
saturated condition as at point 5 is

76.5(195.3 - 191.74)
----'----- = 2.14kglnun
.
191.74-64.59
The third evaporator is also supplied with the vapour formed by the expansion of
mcz = 76.5 kg/min refrigerant while passing through the third expansion valve.
:. Mass of vapours formed by mcz = 76.5 kg/min while passing through the third expansion
valve.

m3" = mc2 ( - Xs ) =16.5 ( 0.13 ) = 11.47 kg/min

1-.xs l-0.13
:. Total mass of refrigerant passing through the third compressor,

= 76.5 + 16.5 + 2.14 + 11.47 = 106.61 kg/min \ ns.
