CONTEMPORARY

PERSPECTIVES ON
TEACHING

THE NEED TO ADAPT TEACHING TO STUDENT

CHARACTERISTICS
Today’s societal characteristics require education to build authentic
learning contexts and connect social, economic and cultural realities
that guide the student into acquiring skills. The teacher becomes an
affective partner of the learner, guiding and not imposing the path and
rhythm of the learners’ formation.

DIDACTIC DESIGN
Didactic Design encompasses the development of learning
environments from conception to evaluation. (Ballstaedt, 1997). Its
purpose is to improve teaching and learning by designing and
implementing digital media.

TASKS OF THE EFFECTIVE TEACHER

DIDACTIC STRATEGIES
inductive strategies -learning from concrete to general, from
intuitive to explanatory
deductive strategies - general to specific, from hypothesis to
observation
analogical strategies - knowledge is mediated by models
transductive strategies - explanation through metaphor
mixed strategies - combinations of the above

THOUGHT PROCESS
I honestly find this activity a bit difficult since the output is
limited to one page only. Creating a flowchart that has to
emphasized the most important parts of the article is quite
a bit of a challenge; however, I tried my best to stick to the
essential parts of the article. I considered the brevity to
ensure that I'll be able to meet the requirements.

I focused on the main parts that caught my attention the

most. For a couple of sentences, I chose the best phrases that
best explain the need to adapt teaching to student
characteristics. I have also included a simple definition of
didactic design that I found online since it is only explained
broadly based on the article. There are a lot of other parts that
I want to include in the infographic; however, I thought that if
given the chance to explain, it is best to be demonstrated and
discussed together for a much better learning experience.
I have also made sure to add the characteristics of an effective
teacher in the infographic since it is one of the most
important things that an aspiring educator should learn and
apply in our teaching career.

These are the three huge questions that can be answered by

the infographic that I created that can spearhead a
meaningful conversation about the topic:

Is there truly a need to adapt teaching to student

characteristics? Why?
How do you define an effective teacher and is the list
limited to how an educator be considered effective?
What do you think is the best didactic strategy to use?
Justify your answer.
The Teacher and the Students

The photo above is the kind of symbol that I chose to best

representat the teacher's and students' relationship. It might
be a bit self-explanatory since the mother duck is the teacher,
while the ducklings are the students. You might be
wondering why I chose this animal for this part. Recently, I
have watched a video from a soial media platform where the
mother duck has guided and taught her ducklings how to
swim for the first time. The duck first demonstrated how it is
done and patiently waited until the ducklings are prepared to
do the same thing. When the duck knows that the ducklings
are prepared, they can be on their own now.
This natural situation can be related to how an educator
guides the students' learning. Teachers are considered to be
the parents of the children while they are at school. Teachers
are the facilitators of learning and not just a mere source of
knowledge. They encourage them to find the answers and be
able to solve problems on their own. A teacher does not just
merely spoon-feed information to students, they provide
resources, monitor their progress, and help them determine
their own and best way of learning. Once the teacher has
deemed that the students are prepared, we can let them learn
on their own and just facilitate the learning. They become
more in-control of learning rather than a teacher doing the
lecture. By choosing to facilitate, teaching and learning is
much more effective in a nutshell.
