FLUID COUPLINGS

1. What is Fluid Coupling?

 A fluid coupling or hydraulic coupling is a hydrodynamic or

‘hydrokinetic’ device used to transmit rotating mechanical power.
 Useful in applications having the requirement of variable speed
operation and controlled start-up.
 Main benefit of power transmission without shock loading.

2. Types of Fluid Couplings

1. Fixed speed type or constant fill type

2. Variable speed or scoop type

3. Working

 Consists of three main parts:

1. Shell or casing having an oil tight seal
2. Input turbine or impeller connected to the input shaft
3. Output turbine or runner connected to the output shaft
 The input turbine is rotated by prime mover (IC engine or a
motor), the input turbine then imparts this rotational motion to
the hydraulic fluid.
 The pump forces the toroid shaped rotating fluid towards the
output turbine.
 The torque is generated due to difference in the angular

Toroid Shape

velocities of input and output turbines.

4. Benefits

 Power transmission is smooth and gradual

 No shock during mechanical power transmission
 There is not any load at the starting on the prime mover
 Maximum torque can be set by adjusting the amount of oil in
the casing

5. Applications

 Used for industrial applications where high inertia is involved

 Railway transportation where semi-automatic transmissions are
involved
 In automotive industry for connection of flywheels
 In aviation industry in hydraulic clutches for engines
