Welcome to TLE – Grade 6 Self-Learning Module (SLM) on Posting and Sharing


Materials on Wikis in a Safe and Responsible Manner.

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators both
from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping the
learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal,
social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their needs and
circumstances.

Today, internet access is always readily available to individuals, companies


and organizations for gathering and sharing information.

Wikis, blogs and audio-video conferencing are some of the most common
applications available via the internet. While computers are used to create, store and
manage critical information. It is also important not only to make the information easily
accessible and available when you need it, but also learn to protect and secure them
from damage, loss data and misuse. There are many information that are confidential
such as credit card records and transactions that can be used by people who are not
allowed to use it safely and responsibly.

What is It

What is a Wiki?
This is a website that is collaborative in nature. It
means that a user or anyone using this website can
participate or work jointly with a creator or author of a
written work in a wiki. To work jointly means one can add,
modify, edit, delete, revise, or update some of the content
of the work of the creator or author of that work. A wiki uses
a software in the name of wiki engine or wiki application.

without any restriction.
However, as a responsible user, you should cite you’re your reliable sources from
which the information you have added in the website can be located.

The term wiki was originally named Wiki wiki Web. This was introduced by
Wrad Cunningham in 1995. This word came from the Hawaiian “Wiki wiki” which
means fast or swift.

Wikipedia – this wiki is the most popular and most used website. It contains
information of practically all kinds of topics or subjects from arts to science; from reality
to fiction; from history to literature to production and manufacturing and anything under
the sun. The Wikipedia can serve as an online version of an encyclopedia. However,
as a responsible user, it is advisable to check carefully the information you get from
this website. You can do this by checking the source of the information or you can use
other references for verification.

Different Types of Web Applications

Wikis, blogs, and video conferencing are web applications that enable
businessmen, students, educators, and individuals to communicate with one another
all throughout the world.
These are different types of wiki websites associated with each other. The table
below shows a brief description of each of the types.

Wikipedia - This is free, open, and multilingual online encyclopedia


where any user can collaborate contribute and edit the article.

Wikitravel- This is a travel guide that uses a Wikimedia’s software. It
provides information about the history, people, culture, and
background of different countries.

Wikispecies- This is a directory of species of all forms of life ranging


from animalia, plantae, fungi, bacteria, etc.

Wikinews- This is a compilation of news story made possible through


collaborative journalism.

Steps in Using Wiki:

1. Open your browser. Some examples are Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, and
Mozilla Firefox.

2. Type in the content that you want to look for in wiki in the search bar. Example:

Posting and Sharing Materials on Wikis

Step 1: Go to the class wiki website. You will be asked to sign in or join the class wiki
with your email address and join code.

Wiki is designed to be an online forum, where you can post information and
allow you to edit or add to it. However, the wiki should be monitored to be sure that no
inappropriate language, spam, and inaccurate or misrepresented content is used. Any
problem encountered by this software would always allow the wiki administrator to
edit.

Safety and Responsible Practices in using Wikis


1. Use the computer or mobile device for learning, study, and research for information
relevant to your subjects.
2. Keep your password safe; do not give it away.
3. Most sites only allow participants who are at least 13 years old. Children should
be guided by their parents or adults in accessing websites.
4. Respect others and treat them the way you would like to be treated.
5. Do not copy other people’s work. If you want to use material from someone else,
make sure to cite the author or source.
6. Do not make untrue remarks that embarrass others.
7. Do not use other people’s accounts.
8. Do not share another person’s full name or send his or her photo without
permission.
9. Be careful in sharing your personal information.

10. If you are the moderator, post the rules for the participants; if you are the
participant, follow the rules or netiquette.
11. Use your time wisely; avoid playing unnecessary games. When you are finish, turn
the computer off.
12. It is recommended that there should be breaks or changes in activity.
13. For computer security, install and use a trusted antivirus software especially when
you are online.
14. Be aware of the rules and regulations, laws, and accounting standards of your
country, other countries as well as where you intend to conduct your business.
15. Be cautious of the messages that you receive. Some of them maybe scam or fake
companies wanting to obtain money from unsuspecting clients.
16. Do not spam or mass mail especially if you want to promote your products. Instead
create a web page or website that will contain all product and service information,
including pictures.
