LESSON 11: GRIT
Lesson Objectives:
1. Define GRIT.
2. Measure the grittiness of the 4th class cadets.
3. Identify the five characteristics of GRIT.
Discussion Notes:
Courage
We might think of courage as a strong physical stance and well-built muscles, but courage
is not a display of physical strength. It is an internal quality the lies within us. Courageous
people have the ability to conquer their obstacles. They have the guts to stay strong in
the midst of trials, they are not ashamed to ask for help, they have the strength to ask for
forgiveness and the gift to forgive others and move on. Courage is an inner resource for
overcoming life’s challenges, not the absence of fear but the triumph over it.
Conscientiousness
Conscientiousness is a fundamental personality trait. It is a thorough, careful, meticulous,
and diligent personality type. Conscientious individuals value quality and excellent work.
They are dedicated, efficient and organized. They also have strong moral principles, high
standards and clear life values. They usually stick to their convictions and opinions. And
they tend to be perfectionists, and prefers to do things properly.
Perseverance
Essentially, to persevere means to be persistent into doing something no matter how
difficult it is. It is a steadfast pursuit of task, mission or journey over an extended period
of time despite all the complications, problems and challenges. It is being able to endure
by finding meaning and value for long-term efforts, which helps cultivate drive and
sustainability.
Resilience
In one word, resilience is defined as “toughness”. The capacity to bounce back no matter
what life throws at you. If you throw them lemons, they make lemonades. Optimistic
individuals show greater resilience. They approach life with a sense of humor, they know
how to make jokes and to laugh at their own mistakes. They are full of hope even in
difficulties and they avoid comparing themselves to others. They see difficulties as
opportunities for self-reflection and transformation.
Passion
Passion is usually driven by a strong desire with a deep sense of purpose. These people
are motivated by their goals and are result-oriented. Sometimes passion observe no
boundaries. Healthy passion establishes clear boundaries. Passionate people with a
healthy sense of passion takes responsibility for their actions.
