LESSON 4: FOLLOWERSHIP STYLE

Lesson Objectives:

1. Examine the different followership styles.

2. Identify one’s followership styles.
Discussion Notes:
FIVE FOLLOWERSHIP STYLES
1. Exemplary followership. Exemplary followers are high in both active
engagement and independent critical thinking. Exemplary followers are willing to
challenge leaders by providing alternative solutions if they disagree with the leader
(Kelley, 1992). They proactively support organizational goals and leader decisions
that are congruent with their beliefs (Kelley, 1992).
2. Conformist followership. Conformist followers rank high in active engagement
but are dependent uncritical thinkers (Kelley, 1992). Kelley (2008) referred to
conformist followers as “yes people”. Conformist followers are very active doers
that unquestioningly follow leader directions (Bjugstad et al., 2006; Kelley, 2008).
3. Passive followers are low in active engagement and are dependent uncritical
thinkers (Kelley, 1992). Passive followers are referred to as sheep (Kelly, 2008)
who unquestioningly follow the leader but only after being given constant direction
(Bjugstad et al., 2006). After completing a task, the passive follower typically waits
for direction before beginning the next task (Latour & Rast, 2004).
4. Alienated followership. Alienated followers are highly independent critical
thinkers but are low in engagement (Kelley, 1992). They think for themselves, but
instead of being positive like exemplary followers, who proactively provide
alternative solutions to the leader, alienated followers are negative critical skeptics
(Kelley, 2008). They consider themselves as nonconformists who are willing to
oppose management (Kelley, 2008).
5. Pragmatist followership. Pragmatists have a moderate level of engagement and
moderate level of critical thinking (Kelley, 1992). They are uncommitted and wait
to see where things are going before they take action (Kelley, 2008). Pragmatists
tend to maintain the status quo and wait for crises to pass before taking action
(Kelley, 2008).

LESSON 11: GRIT

Lesson Objectives:

1. Define GRIT.
2. Measure the grittiness of the 4th class cadets.
3. Identify the five characteristics of GRIT.

Discussion Notes:
Courage
We might think of courage as a strong physical stance and well-built muscles, but courage
is not a display of physical strength. It is an internal quality the lies within us. Courageous
people have the ability to conquer their obstacles. They have the guts to stay strong in
the midst of trials, they are not ashamed to ask for help, they have the strength to ask for
forgiveness and the gift to forgive others and move on. Courage is an inner resource for
overcoming life’s challenges, not the absence of fear but the triumph over it.

Conscientiousness
Conscientiousness is a fundamental personality trait. It is a thorough, careful, meticulous,
and diligent personality type. Conscientious individuals value quality and excellent work.
They are dedicated, efficient and organized. They also have strong moral principles, high
standards and clear life values. They usually stick to their convictions and opinions. And
they tend to be perfectionists, and prefers to do things properly.

Perseverance
Essentially, to persevere means to be persistent into doing something no matter how
difficult it is. It is a steadfast pursuit of task, mission or journey over an extended period
of time despite all the complications, problems and challenges. It is being able to endure
by finding meaning and value for long-term efforts, which helps cultivate drive and
sustainability.

Resilience
In one word, resilience is defined as “toughness”. The capacity to bounce back no matter
what life throws at you. If you throw them lemons, they make lemonades. Optimistic
individuals show greater resilience. They approach life with a sense of humor, they know
how to make jokes and to laugh at their own mistakes. They are full of hope even in
difficulties and they avoid comparing themselves to others. They see difficulties as
opportunities for self-reflection and transformation.

Passion
Passion is usually driven by a strong desire with a deep sense of purpose. These people
are motivated by their goals and are result-oriented. Sometimes passion observe no
boundaries. Healthy passion establishes clear boundaries. Passionate people with a
healthy sense of passion takes responsibility for their actions.

when is the right time for self-care. They celebrate little victories and reward
themselves for hard work.

7. Accept your mistakes- Emotionally mature individuals are aware that they are
not perfect. They have the courage to ask for forgiveness when wrong and they

LESSON 13: RESILIENCY QUOTIENT

Lesson Objectives:

1. Examine the importance of resiliency.

2. Assess one’s resiliency quotient.
Discussion Notes:

Tips To Improve Resilience

Supportive Relationships. Build your connections. Invest time and resources with
your family and friends who care about you. Join a group or a community that you share
the same value with. A sense of connectedness can sustain you in dark times (Dr.
Creagan).

Positive Mindset. Use humor and laughter. Humor is an effective coping mechanism.
Learn to find humor in your situation. Remain hopeful and optimistic despite all the
challenges. Don’t live in the past since you can no longer change it. Instead, be
optimistic about the future and do not give up hope.

Purpose and Fulfillment. Do something everyday that will give you a sense of meaning
and accomplishment. Strive to achieve tasks that you find relevant.

Managing Problems. If there are problems that you need to face, take action, don’t
ignore them. Figure out what should be done, plan about it and resolve it head-on. Trust
yourself that you can make sound decisions and solve problems.
Managing Emotions. Take control of your emotions, do not allow your emotions to get
the best of you. Recognize what you are feeling and find helpful ways of releasing your
negative emotions from your system. You can practice mindful breathing exercises,
mediation and butterfly hugs.

Managing Physiology. Take care of yourself. Learn to listen to your body. Rest when
you are tired, get plenty of sleep, exercise regularly and eat the right food. Visit your
doctor when needed and take your daily vitamins.

Becoming resilient is a skill. Practice building on the above-mentioned areas and as you
train yourself to be a resilient individual you will find that you are truly an OVERCOMER.
Be reminded of these lesson as you will surely find it helpful at some point of your life. If
you feel like you are not making any progress, please don’t hesitate to seek professional
help from the Cadet Welfare Office.
