The Bet in Different Perspectives

The shallowness of material wealth, as one who is

internally rich is not wishing for anything. Life imprisonment
is portrayed as the better option to death, as the person has the
time to develop character. The question is if this could really
happen and how would it done? Is it worth it to spend so much of
your life’s years just to win the bet?
According to the banker, if one may judge a priori, the
death penalty is more moral and more humane than
imprisonment for life. A priori refers to a specific form of
reasoning when thinkers reach conclusions based on reasoning
alone, distinct from experience. The banker’s use of this phrase
shows a lot about the nature of his moral reasoning. It is
abstract, desiring clean lines and absolute conclusions, rather
than contextual. He does not reason in response to people’s
experiences or sufferings. This form of reasoning aligns closely
with the theme of dualism. There is a dramatic irony in which
something that the characters do not specified in the story. It is
perhaps a story wherein the reader is able to formulate lessons or
meaning based on the story itself by considering the attending
circumstances being written by the reader. The man who is
morally confident enough to make such sweeping statements is
the same man who considers killing a man for money when his
fortune change.
Freedom is essential to life. It is the most favored thing
in the Philippines. For some, money can’t buy freedom because if
such privilege is taken away from you, the essence of being alive
might may impaired. Perhaps, it is well protected under our
domestic law particularly, Article 3 of the 1987 Constitution, “Bill
of Rights”. So, imagine a young lawyer, who knows about the
law, bargains his right to win the bet. Instead of looking into the
negative effect of the bet, just look into the positive outcome or
the lessons which they have learned with regard to the bet.
I would think this would be illegal to be put someone
prison for no reason. I could see in a mental hospital were you
could check yourself in and out, but not in a prison. It is a
miserable situation. You will be fixated yourself of the essence of
being a human.  Another reason I feel that you wouldn't be
allowed in a prison is for your safety. You would have to be in a
different part of prison because you are in their voluntarily and
not by force. You would also have the freedom and extra luxury's
that other inmates would not have. Also how you would be
treated? Would you be treated like a normal person who has the
freedom to roam about the prison; or would you be treated like a
criminal with no privileges. Why would someone want to do such
a thing? Would you be mentally prepared to loose everything in
an instead for some money. If the state would let you go through
with your bet. Would you be evaluated for you mental health?
They should do this test to make sure that you clearly understand
what you are doing. Would it be a challenge or an escape from
your bad credit or money problems? Most people would think that
two million dollars for fifteen years of your life, because it is a lot
of money and it would help your future financially. This is you
would separate your greed from a challenge.
Therefore, the story shows us that nobody wins when
excessively stubborn people cross paths.First, situational irony is
used to make both of the main characters look foolish. Second,
the conflict and resolution to the story make it seem like making
the bet was a bad idea. Third, the author used one of the main
character’s profession as a symbol for argument. And last, the
title of the story refers to the bet that the characters make
because they are both stubborn. When having a disagreement
with someone, it is most important to try to understand their
perspective, rather than focusing on winning the argument. When
both parties focus only on winning, everybody loses.
