The Looking Glass Self Theory

The looking glass self-theory describes the process wherein
individuals base their sense of self on how they believe others view
them. It has three steps. First, people imagine how they appear to
others. Second, people imagine what others think of their
appearance. Third, people form opinions and feeling and perceive
judgement about this. Cooley’s theory is notable because it suggests
that self-concept is built not in solitude, but rather within social
settings. In this way, society and individuals are not separate, but
rather two complementary aspects of the same phenomenon . In
short, the theory suggests that we come to know ourselves by reflecting
on how others see us. With this, people have a good idea of how others
see them.
