LOOKING GLASS SELF THEORY

The mechanism by which individuals focus their sense of self on how they feel people see them
is referred to as the looking-glass self. People use social contact as a kind of "mirror," using the
opinions of others to assess their own importance, beliefs, and behaviour. According to Self,
Symbols, and Society, Cooley's hypothesis is noteworthy because it assumes that self-concept is
formed in social environments rather than in isolation. In this sense, culture and people are not
distinct entities, but rather two complimentary facets of the same phenomena.
