Emerging Technology:

Khan Academy

By: Ashlee Velez

WHAT IS KHAN ACADEMY?
• Khan Academy is an emerging technology that
offers free tutoring which can be used by students,
parents and teachers with courses on: Math, Science,
Language arts, Computing, Arts & Humanities,
Economics, Test prep, Life skills, and Reading.
• Khan Academy is a software program, created by
Salman Khan to offer self-paced instructional
videos on subjects; including, content exercises,
quizzes, unit tests, corrective feedback, progress
tracking, and discussion boards.
KHAN ACADEMY IN THE CLASSROOM:
• Khan Academy has over 10 million users worldwide and is now being used in
more than 29,000 classrooms to personalize instruction. Khan Academy allows
teachers to have more engaging instruction by giving students the opportunity to
master subjects in a quicker time, yet still at their own pace.
• Teachers use Khans videos for instruction in part with their lesson plans to help
free more class time for other learning activities. Teachers show students videos in
class, and then have them complete problem worksheets from the provided
material. Homework can be assigned for students to which they can complete
modules and quizzes on the software program where teachers can track students
progress.
PROS OF KHAN ACADEMY:
• A free program for students which allows them to get
interactive tutoring in subjects that can be accessed
from anywhere in the world.
• Gives students the opportunity to master subjects in a
way that works best for them.
• Identifies the needs of learners so teachers can modify
classroom instruction.
• Videos offer alternative explanations for students to
better comprehend the material being taught.
• The software makes for quicker instruction so class
time can be used for other learning activities.
CONS OF KHAN ACADEMY:
• When used in the classroom as part of instruction, students work
independently on work at their own pace on their own accounts rather
then as a group project.
• Not all students may have access if required to complete homework since
the software is a computer-based program and requires access to
technology in order to be used.
• If Khan Academy is not integrated properly into the classroom, then it will
not serve its intended purpose to free up class time for other learning
activities; however, a guide for teachers is not provided on how to
successfully integrate Khan Academy into the classroom curriculum.
