Content Standards 8.NR.2.1: Apply the properties of integer exponents to generate equivalent
numerical expressions.
CRM.NR.2.3: Apply the rules of exponents to simplify numerical expressions,
extending the properties of exponents to rational exponents.
Technology Standards 1c: Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their
practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.
2b: Students engage in positive, safe, legal and ethical behavior when using
technology, including in social interactions online or when using networked
devices.
7a: Students use digital tools to connect with learners from a variety of
backgrounds and cultures, engaging with them in ways that broaden mutual
understanding and learning.
Integrated Technology This lesson uses the adaptive online learning platform of Khan Academy.

Usage Plan I believe that online collaboration sites can be invaluable resources for
students to learn and work with peers and mentors across the world.
Educational websites that provide this sort of interaction are far more organic
and productive than a rigid set of resources alone. It also makes learning feel
less isolating by engaging students in a community of learners.
Online projects take this and elevate it to have students gather data and
create original products, but this also increases the difficulty of
implementation. For a Math class, I believe the most fitting place to implement
one would be during a statistics unit, where students gather and publish their
own data and analysis on a subject of their choice.
Design Features Khan academy provides an opportunity for students to interact with peers and
mentors by asking questions in the moderated comment sections under
content videos. By encouraging students to help each other through this
medium, this also contributes to higher-order thinking and creating a more
student-centered learning environment. Peer to peer assistance may not be
publishing in a traditional sense, but it is something that others will use/care
about.
Universal Design The UDL principle most demonstrated in this lesson is the third, providing
Rationale multiple means of engagement. Khan Academy can adapt to what students
struggle with and allow students to learn at their own pace. The platform is
also structured to emphasize the value of growth towards attaining mastery
rather than one shot performance on assessments.
Lesson Idea For this lesson, students will take the first lesson within the 11th unit of
Khan Academy’s Algebra I course up until the first quiz, the unit’s focus being
on exponentials and radicals. The lesson will be introduced as a review of the
key concepts and properties of exponentials. It should take about 45 minutes
for students to complete, but given the potential advantage of student paced
learning, it’s worth giving students time outside of class to complete it as well.
During class time, students will work through the lesson and collaborate with
their peers either face to face or digitally. In this environment students may
also ask the teacher for help.
