TWO NEW SPECIES OF ODONTALEYRODES TAKAHASHI

(IIOMOPTERA : ALEYRODIDAE) FROM INDIA
B. VasantbaraJ -David
Entomology Research Unit, Loyola College, Madras-34, India
Takahashi (1954) erected the genus Odontaleyrodes for two species of Pealius
viz., P. akeblae (Kuwana) and P. rhododendri Takahashi, both from Japan.
Subsequently he (1955) described three more species of Odonlaleyrodcs from

Japan and also referred Peal/us damnacanlhl Takahashi (from Taiwan) to this
genus. In the present paper two new species are being described under tbis
genus from India, recording it from this region for tbe first time.
1. Odontaleyrodes Indlous, sp. nov. (Figs. 1-3)
Pupal case: Pale without any waxy secretion, elliptical, not constricted at
tboracic tracbeal pore ends, not indented at caudal end; 0.50-0.61 mm long,
0.31-0.41 mm wide; found on both surfaces of Jeaf in shallow pits.
Margin: Paired anterior and posterior marginal setae present, 10,.,. long.
Margin crenulatc with irregular teeth. rounded 25. teeth in 0.1 mm; thoracic
and caudal tracheal combs or pores absent.
Dorsal surface: Dorsum with two pairs of minute setae, 3.5,.,. long-a pair on
the cephalic region and a pair laterad of base of vasiform orifice; setae on first
abdominal segment wanting. A distinct oval brown marking seen anterior to
cephalic seta. Transverse moulting suture extends to the margin. Abdominal
segments distinct with paired submedian depressed markings on segments 1·6;
second abdominal suture bends sublaterally to anterior; seventh abdominal seg-
ment very short or obscured at the median part; minute paired pores and porettes
evident submedially on thoracic and abdominal segments 1·6 and scattered on
subdorsum.
Submnrgln not separated from dorsal disc; about 16 pairs of minute pores
and porettes present; submarginal setae arising all tubercles. short, 15 pairs
(excluding the caudal setae) with 8 pairs on cephalothorllx and the remaining on
abdominal region. 17·26 I" long. A pair of caudal setae, 301' long. Thoracic
tracheal furrows wanting.
Vasiform orifice in a shallow pit, wider thlln long, 2~..33,.,. wide, 23·261" longi
operculum similar shaped. 23·26" wide, 14" long; lingula setaso, knobbed with a
blunt lateral tubercle at base. exposed, sometimes extending Slightly beyond
caudal margin of orifice. Caudal furrow broadened cephalad narrowing posteriorly
extending to margin. 56 I' long with distinct transverse mark.ings.

Figs. 1·3. Pupal case, margin of case and vasiform orifice of

Odolllaleyrodes Indlcus, sp. nov.

Ventral surface: Ventral abdominal setae 10(.1. long. 30(.1. apart. Anterior and
posterior abdominal spiracles visible. Antenna shorter than fore Jeg with a short
pointed apical process. A minute seta at base of meso- and metathoracic legs
evident. A pair of minute setae at base of rostrum present. Thoracic and caudal
tracheal folds not discernible.
Described from numerous unmounted and 31 mounted specimens, on an uni-
dentified shrub. D.V. David. llolotype (l pupal case) and paratypes (25 pupal
cases mounted), MVSORB STATIl : Saklaspur. 1.000 m, 12.viii.1971.
This species is easily distinguished from the other known species by'the dis-
tinct brown patches on cephalic region anterior to cephalic setae. 15 pairs of
short submarginal setae and ca\ldal furrow With transverse markings.
2. Odontaleyrodes nllglriensls. sp. nov. (Figs. 4-6)
Pupal case: White with a little wax around tbe margin: elliptical. a little
narrower at bind end; 0.68-0.75 mm long. 0.43·0.47 mm wide; found on the
undersurface of leaf.

Figs. 4·6. Pupal case, margin of case and vasiform orifice of Odon·
taleyrodel nil,lrlenllr, sp. 119v.

Margin: Paired anterior and posterior margin:ll setae 11 IL and 14·17 fC long
respectively. Margin crenulate with 23~24 irregular rounded teeth in 0.1 mm;
thoracic and caudal tracheal combs or p'ore8 not indicated.
Dorsal surface: Dorsum smooth with two p:lirs of setae-a pait of cephalic
setae 53-99/Jo long but sometimes about lOJl\ong (not shown in Fig.) and a pair
of small setae laterad of base of vasiform orifice 7Jl long; setae on first abdominal
segment absent. Transverse moulting suture extends to the margin. Abdominal
segments distinct without a rhachis; paired depressed mnrkings evident submedi-
all)' on meso- #nd metathoracic sesments and on abdominal sesments 1-6; secon4

abdominal suture bends to anterior laterally; seventh abdominal segment very

short or obscured at median part.
Submargin not separated from dorsal disc; submarginal setae long, some-
times a little apart from the body margin; 15 pairs of submarginal setae exclud-
ing the caudal setae of which 8 pairs are on cephalothorax and the remaining
on abdominal region. 53-116 p. long arising on distinct circular bases; caudal
setae on tubercles, 41-69 " long. About 16 pairs of submarginal minute pores
discernible. Thoracic tracheal furrows absent.
Vasiform orifice in a shallow pit. 30-33 I' long. 36-40 I' wide; operculum
wider than long. 30-33 p. wide, 17-23 p. long; lingula setose. knobbed with a
blunt lateral tubercle at base, exposed. slightly extending beyond posterior

margin of orifice. Caudal furrow broadened cephalad narrowing posteriorly

almost reaching the margin. 59-73 I' long. with distinct transverse markings.
Ventral surface: Ventral abdominal setae 13 p. long. 33 I' apart. AU the
four pairs of spiracles evident. Antenna shorter than fore leg with a short
pointed apical process. A minute seta at base of meso- and meta thoracic legs
and a pair at base of rostrum evident. Thoracic and caudal tracheal folds not
discernible.
Described from many unmounted and 13 mounted specimens, on an un-
identified twiner at Dotanic Gardens, TAMIL NADU : Ootacamund (The Nilgiris),
2.300 m. 3.viii.1969. D.V. David. lIololype (1 pupal case) and paratypes (12
pupal cases mounted).
In the presence of long submarginal setae this species resembles Odontaley-
rodes kongosana Takahashi from which. however. it differs in tbe number of
submarginal setae, structural details of vasiform orifice and caudal furrow with
transverse markings.
All types in author'S collection.
