MOTIVE QUESTIONS

1 Try to describe Anna's tragedy in your own words. Consider her career if
she remained faithful to Karenin and then consider the rewards of her
guilty existence with Vronsky. Is there a right and wrong in her choice of
destiny? Does Anna have a choice?

Anna Karenina is no Romeo and Juliet story. It is not a story of

teenagers that were unreasonably ruined by the laws of the elderly.
This novel is more like a story between adults that were tormented by

m
different boundaries in life. For me, Anna was right to leave a

er as
co
relationship that truly hurts her heart and soul. It was best for her to

eH w
follow her heart who greatly desires for love and passion that she

o.
rs e
doesn’t feel for her husband.

On the other hand, the way she handled her situation was
definitely inappropriate. Anna wanted to free herself from her life with
o

her husband as she doesn’t feel love from him. She wanted to make
aC s

herself happy with her life that she had to seek happiness from other
vi y re

people and that person happened to be Vronsky. Anna had an affair

with Vronsky and eventually, they had a child. Absolutely, Anna had a
ed d

choice not to cheat on her husband. What she did was sinful and
ar stu

unethical especially when she doesn’t agree to a divorce and stay with
her husband, but still persisted on cheating on him with Vronsky. If only
is

she remained faithful to her husband from the very start, then she
Th

might have not felt the guilt and disgrace that she experienced with
the consequences of her sinful actions.

2 What is the significance of Anna's deathbed scene?

Karenin and Vronsky showed how they accepted Anna’s possible
death in certain ways. Vronsky was too stern in bearing the intensity of
his love from Anna thus the reason why he attempted to end his life.

Contrarywise, for Karenin, Anna’s deathbed appears to be the means
of Anna’s plea for forgiveness for Karenin, Vronsky, and also to herself.

3 What characteristics do Anna and Levin share?

One thing that I noticed that makes Anna and Levin share a
similarity is that both of them seeks for love and affection. The only
difference was that Levin pursued Kitty, who in the end, became his
wife and the mother of his child while Anna, who was already married
and has a son, still strive for love from Vronsky that subsequently led
to her death.
