TRIZ for strong N sustainable solutions

TRIZ is a problem-solving, analysis and forecasting tool derived from the study of patterns of invention in
the global patent literature. (What TRIZ) It was developed by the Soviet inventor and science-fiction author
Genrich Altshuller (1926-1998) and his colleagues, beginning in 1946 (When TRIZ). Altshuller and team
studied lakhs of inventions spanning many fields resulting in a theory that anybody can learn and practice
innovation.

TRIZ reveals patterns of evolution and profess for an algorithmic approach to the invention of new systems,
or refining existing ones. Brain
storming on the other hand generate
random solution, which may or may
not work.(Why TRIZ)

TRIZ includes a practical

methodology, tool sets (~30), a
knowledge base of effects, and
model-based technology for generating innovative solutions for
problem solving. It is intended for application in problem formulation, system analysis, failure analysis, and
patterns of system evolution. (How TRIZ)

 Others have already resolved your problems; you need to find those solutions and apply to your
problems. In TRIZ the scientists who solved similar problems are helping you to arrive at
solutions to your problems. (Who TRIZ)
 Think in terms of contradictions for arriving at sustainable solutions. (How TRIZ)
 TRIZ is not a substitute for thinking; but enable you to think in correct track. (What TRIZ)
 TRIZ is a human-oriented knowledge-based systematic
methodology of inventive problem solving for usage by
engineers. (What, where, how, who & when TRIZ)

TRIZ is about allowing you to access excellence in a systematic way.

Ideality, Resources, Functionality, Contradictions and Space/Time interface are five pillars of TRIZ.

The Law of Ideality states that any technical system, throughout its lifetime, tends to become more reliable,
simple, effective — more ideal.

Smart solutions make better use of existing resources. Even the stuff we think is “bad” in a system can be
transformed into something useful if we think properly. In case of Inventive problem solving, the available
resources are often hidden from solvers.

All systems exist to perform useful functions. Customers buy the functions that things perform not the thing
itself. When you are buying, a drilling machine the function you are looking for is one inch holes.

Contradictions and conflicts occur as natural phenomena. Successive identification and resolution of
contradiction is important. Smart solutions eliminate contradictions, conflicts and compromises.

TRIZ calls for looking at things from many different perspectives not only physically and temporally. The
relationships between the things can be as important as the things itself. “9 windows” tools is used to
identify Space, Time, Interface among systems. “9 windows” is having subsystem, system and super system
on Y axis. On X axis past, present and future of the system are placed.

TRIZ tools:

Su-Fields (Substance Field system model) tools is built on the finding that, in order to deliver a function,
systems must contain at least two substances (or things) and one connecting energy source or field.

Ideal Final Result (IFR)is defined as that state where the useful function (benefit) is delivered without cost
or harm.

Trends The knowledge of trends and their usage is a tool of problem-solving in technology, manufacturing,
society and nature. Problem solving in any system is a transformation of the system from its problematic
state into a system without problems; or new system creation by natural means or trends of evolution.

40 Inventive principles will take you from problem state to solution state. They are Segmentation,
Extraction, Local Quality, Asymmetry, Combination, Universality, ‘Nested Doll’, Counterweight, Prior
Counter-Action, Prior Action, Prior Cushioning, Equi-potentiality, ‘The Other Way Round’, Spheroidality,
Dynamics, Partial or Excessive Action, Another Dimension, Mechanical Vibration, Periodic Action, Continuity
of Useful Action, Skipping, ‘Blessing in Disguise’, Feedback, Intermediary, Self-Service, Copying,
Cheap/Short Living, Mechanics Substitution, Pneumatics and Hydraulics, Flexible Shells/Thin Films, Porous
Materials, Color Changes, Homogeneity, Discarding and Recovering, Parameter Changes, Phase Transitions,
Thermal Expansion, Strong Oxidants, Inert Atmosphere & Composite Materials.

Contradiction Matrix details how problem solvers have solved a broad range of conflict situations. The
axes of matrix comprise the most important parameters relevant to the design of the technical systems.
Each box within the matrix defines the strategies most likely to solve a conflict situation. The numbers
described in the matrix boxes correspond to the numbers of the inventive principles.
Knowledge Base of Effects provides answers to such queries in the form of a list of Effects, i.e. physical
phenomena or applications of physical phenomena . E.g.there are 130 methods of moving liquid, spanning
from physical absorption to wind. About 10000 of such effects are codified and available in various web site.

9 Windows or System Operator is a simple means of helping users to think in terms of TIME and SPACE.
