    WHAT IS HISTORY

    MODULE 1

    What is History

    History is the study of life in society in the past, in all its aspect, in relation to present
    developments and future hopes. It is the story of man in time, an inquiry into the past based
    on evidence. Indeed, evidence is the raw material of history teaching and learning.
    Why study History

    Studying history enables us to develop better understanding of the world in which we live.
    Building knowledge and understanding of historical events and trends, especially over the
    past century, enables us to develop a much greater appreciation for current events today.

    Meaning of History

    History (from Greek ἱστορία, historia, meaning "inquiry; knowledge acquired by


    investigation") is the study of the past. Events occurring before the invention of writing
    systems are considered prehistory.
