CRIM 1-B

MODULE 3 ASSIGNMENT

1. Crime Typology is categorizing and varying of crime classes based on its similar attributes to form multiple
homogenous types, instead of studying it all as a single and same species. There are three reasons why this is
important:
a. Typology is to better understand a variety of crimes and criminals. And knowing their similarities and
differences will manifest what are the suitable measures for an effective crime control and prevention. We
cannot recognize the nature of crimes if we view them all the same. Since our society is already considered
‘gemeinschaft’, or simply related to individualistic concerns, crimes cannot be in uniform. Various types of
crime have different acts, reactions, setting, conditions or circumstances in prominent areas of the society. To
give an example, a murderer’s behavior is different from a thief. Although they are both criminals, their goal
upon commission is different. Glady, there is criminal typology to help us analyze the complexity of breaking
down the field.
b. Typology is for proper sanctions, penalizations and rehabilitations. This is especially true in our country,
Philippines, where various crimes happen, but inconsolably implements ‘one-shaped’ approach wherein only
one type of sanction, rehabilitation or treatment is being invested for all types of crime. The lack of variation
calls for competency of the penology. We need a more comprehensive review on the typology of crimes that
should help improving the behavior of criminals through extensive measures based on their classification.
c. Typology gets the study organized for criminologists. The study of crime is undeniably dynamic and
diverse, and we certainly cannot learn it in one go. But with the help of various classifications, it gets the job
done and makes it easier to know the context of one crime from another and how they differ. Therefore, the
field is enriched and made effective, as criminologists will have the chance to go down to proper details and
know better for the crime prevention and control in our society.
d. Typology will update and validate the community about the current crime trends, given the number of
convictions in a particular typology.

2. The preceding tables will show the typologies of crime criminologically and legally. The shaded/checked cells are
its classifications. It is also notable that some of them can possess more than 1 typology.

3. Firstly, we all know that Criminology is also about studying a criminal’s point of view upon commission of
crime. Criminal typology helps in achieving this goal by conceptualizing a better understanding about its
nature and the possible roots and causes of such crime, given its classification among others.
Secondly, typologies also contribute in the law’s proportionality of the punishments to be implemented
to offenders. We are able to determine the extent of the effects of offenses and how severe they can be in the
society based on their set of categories, and evaluating how the community thinks about its classes or groups.
With typology, crimes are also grouped according to their identity and needs to effectively penalize the criminals
in a certain and just manner. Similar crimes usually have similar punishments or rehabilitation programs. Lighter
set of crimes have light penalties.
Thirdly, in a concrete aspect, typology can also help improve and develop penal facilities, since we can
have the chance to segregate them in their proper placements. Segregation of crimes is very important in jail
management because simply disregarding the current state of prisoner by carelessly putting them all together
behind the same greasy and rotten bars will create chaos instead of repentance among criminals with no
progression of crime dynamics at all. Therefore, specific types of criminals should be put together to have a more
organized system in jail management.

4. Victimology is the study of victims and the effects of the crime in them through examining various aspects of
their affected personality such as cognitive, behavioral, psychological or emotional features. It aims to understand
how the victims were involved in the commission of a specific crime. Meanwhile, Criminology focuses on the
main context which is investigating the crime and the criminal. Because of this, Victimology is simply a branch of
Criminology that aids in the details of the crime investigation by having an extensive view or study on the people
affected by the crime.
Still, they still come hand-in-hand and are directly related with one another. Without a victim, there is no
crime or criminal.
